Crossing to Live in the Wilderness Plains 101

Chapter 101

The little wolf cub heard Aze call to him, clamped its tail between its legs, and took a tentative step back with its hind foot. After realizing that the giant wolf-god didn’t react to its small movement, the other leg also took a step back.

The giant wolf-god withdrew its gaze from Aze and moved it down slightly to glance at the little one who was cautiously moving backwards.

The little wolf cub had been closely watching for the giant wolf-god’s actions. Upon seeing that the other’s gaze was on it, it stopped stiffly, and the fur all over his body stood on end, like a little white hedgehog.

“Little Wolf.” After coming down from Aze’s hold, Ajing saw that the little wolf cub was still standing in the same spot, and called out anxiously.

Seemingly because it heard Ajing’s voice, the little wolf cub’s drooping ears suddenly perked up, and it no longer hesitated, but turned around and ran towards Ajing.

The giant wolf-god saw the little wolf cub’s movements and raised one of its front paws, trying to stop it.

Aze had been staring at the giant wolf-god, and when he saw the giant wolf-god reach out its claw, he stepped forward and raised his hand to block its front paw. The little wolf cub took advantage of this gap and directly jumped into Ajing’s arms, and Ajing quickly hugged the little wolf cub and retreated a distance, so as not to be affected by their battle.

The little wolf cub decided it felt safe and changed its earlier cowardly appearance and perked back up, baring its teeth and howling provocatively at the giant wolf-god.

The giant wolf-god was taller than Aze, so it stood looking at a slightly downwards angle at this beastman who was much smaller than it. There was no trace of fear in its eyes, and its interest seemed to have peaked by the situation, a hint of amusement flashing in the eyes of the giant wolf-god. Its huge tail swept from behind unexpectedly. Aze couldn’t dodge in time, and rolled on the spot to avoid the attack. Before he managed to get back up again, a claw as heavy as a thousand catties stepped directly on his chest, almost making him gasp.

It’s too fast. The thought had just flashed through his mind when he felt a coldness on his neck. Aze gritted his teeth and stopped trying to struggle. When he looked up, he saw the cold glint of the giant wolf-god’s sharp teeth against his neck, and Aze even felt some viscous liquid flowing out of his broken skin.

“Aze.” Ajing exclaimed. He and the little wolf cub rushed forward, one to the left, one to the right, to hug the giant wolf-god’s hind legs, trying to pull it away from Aze’s side.

The giant wolf-god felt an itch on its hind legs. The little wolf cub’s baby teeth that had not yet fully developed and Ajing’s little claws, could not even break through its fur. It quietly watched the two little things trying to be fierce as they clung on to its legs and rolled its eyes silently. Then, with a curl of its tail, the two small figures were flung into the soft, tall grass nearby, and they were instantly submerged by the grass, their figures disappearing.

Seeing the expression of the beastman under its claw, the giant wolf-god appreciatively released the pressure under its paw. As its sharp teeth left the other’s soft neck, it also stuck out its tongue to lick away the blood that had oozed out, but the taste of the beastman’s blood made it unconsciously frown.

As soon as the giant wolf-god loosened its paw on him, Aze rolled aside and quickly distanced himself from it. He swiftly ran to the tall grass nearby and silently breathed a sigh of relief when he saw two small figures baring their teeth, ready to pounce out. Then he raised his head and looked in the direction of the giant wolf-god, but there was no longer any hint of the other figure. Aside from the trampled pile of weeds that showed what just happened there, even the scent of the giant wolf-god was gone from the air.

“Did it leave?” Ajing went over to Aze’s side and asked anxiously. Although he had rushed forward very bravely earlier, the gap between his strength and the giant wolf-god’s terrified him now. The little wolf cub crept up to Ajing’s feet and stuck out its tongue to lick a small piece of reddened skin on his feet that had been scratched by the branches.

Aze shook his head. He was not sure if the giant wolf-god was still around. He observed the surrounding area vigilantly, but found no danger. So he bent down to pick up Ajing and the little wolf cub and quickly left the place.

After returning to the tribe, Aze sent Ajing and the little wolf cub home first, then he went to the hunting team’s office not far from the city gate. This place was built following Chen Qi’s suggestion to Azhang, so he could come here to deal with tribal affairs, instead of having the tribesmen always running over to his house every day.

After lunch, Chen Qi went home and put away a handful of green vines that had been drying in the courtyard. This kind of green vine was as thick as a fist, but was very light, and even when it was not dry, such as if it were thrown into water, it did not sink. After Chen Qi found out about this trait, he chopped down a lot of them and went home, intending to make two life buoys.

There were many big rivers, not only in the Loya Forest, but also in the Dora Plains. In the closer Chishui River, there are occurrences every year where beastmen accidentally fall into the water and drown. Chen Qi was worried about the fact that the beastmen couldn’t swim, so he planned to teach them how to swim over the summer.

How fun it would be to learn how to swim.

He weaved the dried green vines into a ring, then sewed on an outer layer of sheepskin, leaving a small opening to inflate the insides. Then, he sewed a piece of cloth coated with several layers of gum fruit liquid as the outermost layer. The gum fruit had a waterproofing effect. Although the cloth was not so soft after drying, it could barely be used as canvas.

Chen Qi then painted the cloth with conspicuous orange colored dye-fruits, and the life buoy was completed.

In order to test the effect of life buoy, Chen Qi also filled the large bathtub in the bathroom with water. The life buoy he just made was small, suitable for children like Ajing, and there was still a lot of room in the bathtub.

The ivy was very light, and the space within it was filled with air. It took Chen Qi a lot of effort to press the whole life buoy into the water, and as soon as he released the life buoy, it immediately floated up. Chen Qi took it out with satisfaction.

A slight noise outside the door caught Chen Qi’s attention. He put the life buoy aside, wiped his hands and walked out. He saw Ajing walking in on his tiptoes, carrying a hide backpack as tall as him on his back.

“What are you doing?” He looked like a little thief.

Ajing was startled by the sudden sound and shook his head reflexively. “I’m not doing anything.”

The little wolf cub saw Chen Qi and was extremely excited. It left Ajing behind and ran to Chen Qi’s side. With big round eyes and a drooping tail, it rubbed against Chen Qi’s heel aggrievedly.

Ajing couldn’t help but glare at the little traitor. Clearly, they had agreed not to let Chen Qi notice that anything was abnormal.

Chen Qi looked at the dirty-furred little wolf cub at his feet, and at Ajing’s clothes, which had several tears. Furthermore, in the rips, he could vaguely see traces of red marks inside. Although they did not appear to have broken skin, he was obviously injured.

Chen Qi’s face became cold and his voice became a bit stern. “Shouldn’t you tell me about what happened today?”

Seeing Chen Qi’s expression, Ajing’s small body couldn’t help trembling. The little wolf cub also did not dare to continue rubbing his ankles to please him. It slowly moved to Ajing’s side and finally buried its head in Ajing’s feet, thinking that if it couldn’t see Chen Qi, then Chen Qi naturally would not be able to see it either.

Ajing did not dare to hide any more. He quickly spilled the beans and told him all about meeting the giant wolf-god and did not even hide that Aze was bitten by the giant wolf-god. After that, he secretly observed Chen Qi’s expression. Seeing that he didn’t look like he was about to scold him, he couldn’t help but rub the little wolf cub to vent the emotions he’d repressed for so long. It was rather strange that Chen Qi, the male, obviously had no fighting ability, but as long as he turned stern, everyone would become jittery.

Chen Qi rubbed Ajing’s head and helped him set down the hide backpack on his back. Then he went to light a fire to heat a large bucket of water to have him and the little wolf cub wash off the dirt on their bodies. The wounds on Ajing’s body had not broken skin, so there was no need to apply any medicine. It was estimated that even the traces would disappear in a couple of days.

Aze only came back after dark, and his cautious appearance when he returned was comparable to that of Ajing’s. But just as he entered the courtyard, he heard a familiar voice, “You’re back?”

Aze followed the sound and saw that Chen Qi had not turned on a lamp, but sat quietly on a wooden bench in the courtyard. Next to him was a cup of tea that had been drunk, and his body was basked in a faint moonlight, which made him look quite stern.

En.” Judging from the other’s expression, the fact that he was injured should have been discovered.

Chen Qi didn’t say much. He got up and walked into the house first. Aze hurriedly followed.

Pushing open the door, he found clean gauze placed on the low table by the fire, and there was the covered bamboo tube which contained the crushed herbs.

Chen Qi motioned for Aze to sit beside him. Aze was worried that Chen Qi would see the wound on his neck, so he’d turned up his collar. Chen Qi gently loosened the button. The wound on his neck was only skin deep. It was not serious and had stopped bleeding long ago.

Chen Qi used a towel he’d soaked in boiled water to clean his wound. There was no disinfectant here. Though he was bitten by a wolf, he shouldn’t contract rabies, right? It seems that he would have to find some time to fiddle with some wine. While thinking, Chen Qi applied the herbs and tied the bandage.

En. Can you tell me why you wanted to hide it from me?” Chen Qi asked after tying the bandage.

“I was afraid you’d be worried.”

Hearing this answer, Chen Qi was almost angered into laughter, “Do you think that I won’t worry if I don’t know?”

Aze pursed his lips and stopped talking.

“Then, next time I get hurt, I won’t tell you either. What will you do?”

“No way.” Aze replied without thinking, “I won’t let you get hurt.”

Chen Qi pinched his face, and Aze let those hands pinch his face until it was out of shape, “Then next time something happens, you can’t hide it from me. Encountering the giant wolf-god was not something you could control. But if you hide it, are you afraid that I will worry or that I will get angry? If I get angry, I will go straight back to my hometown.” En. Even if Chen Qi wanted to go back, this hometown of his was not so easy to go back to.

When he heard Chen Qi say that he’d go back to his hometown, Aze got a fright and nodded hastily, promising, “I’ll tell you everything in the future, you don’t go back.”

En, I won’t go back.” After receiving Aze’s promise, Chen Qi touched the bandage on his neck, feeling some heartache, “Does it hurt?”

“It doesn’t hurt.” This kind of wound would heal in less than two days. If Chen Qi didn’t look so worried every time he got a little injury, he wouldn’t have tried to hide it this time either.

“That the giant wolf-god appeared at the periphery of the forest at this time, is it dangerous?”

“No.”

“You were bitten by it but you still say it’s not dangerous?” Chen Qi rolled his eyes at him.

“The giant wolf-god does not eat beastmen.” Aze thought for a moment, then added, “The giant wolf-god has never killed beastmen.”

There is something hypnotic about this story. I’m always happy when I see a new chapter!

What I think about this story?
I think Aze is too cute! I want to transmigrate over there and marry Ali! (yes, Ali. I just love that guy to death.)
Aside from that, I love beastmen novel, especially those in tribal setting.
Or generally novel with a slice of life setting in ancient times, since they are very calming and there’s rarely drama made up by stupid wanna-be-villains.
Did I mention that I want to transmigrate over there? Like.. right now?? Sure, life would not be as convenient as in modern times, but it does have a certain charm.
