Chapter 24: Strength
Daylight had fully broken.
After the final wisp of spiritual qi carrying traces of purple merged into the qi cluster between his brows and stopped wandering through his body, Jing Lin emerged from his meditation.
At some point, Duckie had quietly climbed out of its box and settled beside him again. The moment it saw Jing Lin wake up, it seemed to remember being disliked the day before. It immediately stood up, flapped its tiny wings, and scampered across the pillow on its little feet before leaping back into the cardboard box. Then it curled up with its back facing Jing Lin and refused to move.
The silly goose was actually sulking. Jing Lin didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
While brushing his teeth after getting up, Jing Lin stretched and twisted his body in the backyard. The air felt especially fresh that morning. The Spirit-Locking Array truly lived up to its reputation.
After washing rice and setting it to cook, he added several pieces of firewood to the stove. Then he grabbed a hoe and the bok choy seeds he had bought earlier and headed to the front yard. He finished turning over the section of vegetable plot he had not completed the day before and scattered the seeds.
Thinking about the vegetables in the backyard that had been left as food for Duckie, Jing Lin became curious about how bok choy grown inside a Spirit Gathering Array would develop. So he set up a Spirit Gathering Array around one section of the garden.
Instantly, he sensed all the spiritual qi that had been trapped around the house by the Spirit-Locking Array rushing toward the newly established formation.
By the time he finished planting, breakfast had already been cooked. Jing Lin called Le Le to get up, wash up, and eat.
Just as they finished breakfast, Yan Fei arrived.
The moment he stepped into Jing Lin’s courtyard, he felt that the air was unusually fresh. One deep breath felt as though his lungs had been thoroughly cleansed.
He assumed it was simply because Jing Lin’s house was closer to the mountains and surrounded by more trees, and he gave it no further thought.
After opening the door for him, Jing Lin asked Yan Fei to sit in the living room while he finished cleaning up the kitchen.

That left Le Le, who was holding Duckie, sitting on the sofa, staring awkwardly at Yan Fei.
To Le Le, Yan Fei was simply a handsome uncle he had met a few times—a virtual stranger. Being left alone with a stranger made him uncomfortable. His arms tightened around Duckie as he prepared to jump off the sofa and look for his uncle.
Then he suddenly heard the handsome uncle across from him say, “It’s very cute.”
Le Le paused. He cautiously looked up and met Yan Fei’s friendly smile.
For some reason, the nervousness in his heart eased. Hearing someone praise Duckie, he gently stroked the feathers on its back. He did not say anything, but slowly nodded.
He thought Duckie was very cute too.
The goose puffed out its chest proudly and gave two cheerful quacks. It clearly agreed that it was very cute.
Seeing that Le Le no longer looked ready to flee at any moment, Yan Fei used Duckie as a conversation starter and tried chatting with him. After all, Le Le was Jing Lin’s nephew. Whether Jing Lin would ever accept him in the future, Le Le would certainly play an important role. Winning points with Le Le now could only help.
When Jing Lin emerged from the kitchen, he found the two sitting together, one large and one small, their heads slightly inclined toward each other as they chatted quietly.
Le Le was smiling. He looked genuinely happy. Seeing that smile, Jing Lin could not help smiling as well.
Yan Fei happened to look up at that exact moment. The instant he saw Jing Lin smile, his heart began pounding wildly. It felt as though it might leap right out of his chest. The sensation was so intense that he nearly pressed a hand over his heart.
For the first time in his life, Yan Fei understood with complete clarity what it meant to have his heart moved.
Jing Lin’s smile disappeared almost as quickly as it had appeared. Le Le immediately threw himself at him, so Jing Lin paid little attention to Yan Fei’s reaction.
Taking Le Le’s hand, he said, “Let’s go.”
Jing Lin grabbed his hoe and locked the door behind them.
As they headed toward Ma Renshan’s house, Yan Fei mentioned that Zhao Zhiwen and Yan Lu had already gone ahead. Earlier that morning, Zhao Zhiwen had gone to Yan Fei’s house and suggested they all go find Jing Lin together. Everyone knew his true intentions were not focused on Jing Lin, so nobody exposed him. When it was time to leave, Yan Fei told Zhao Zhiwen and Yan Lu to go ahead while he waited for Jing Lin. On the way, Jing Lin and Yan Fei first stopped by Zhao Anguo’s house.

Fortunately, Ma Xiaoyuan had already regained consciousness.
When they arrived, he was lying on a wooden bed and looked much better than before. He was even able to greet people.
Zhao Anguo had just changed his IV drip. Liao Juan was using a syringe to drain newly accumulated fluid from the blisters. Nearby, Liu Yinghua and Liu Suqin sat together feeding Ma Xiaoyuan porridge. Both women had red, swollen eyes and looked exhausted, but their faces were filled with happiness. Nothing mattered more than the fact that Ma Xiaoyuan had awakened.
Jing Lin and Yan Fei were not the first visitors that day. Not wanting to disturb Ma Xiaoyuan’s rest, they expressed a few words of concern before leaving for Ma Renshan’s house.
Since everything had been arranged the day before, everyone arrived early. No one was absent.
When Big Mouth Zhang showed up, looking perfectly healthy, people immediately asked how the giant ant eggs had tasted.
Big Mouth Zhang grinned. “Delicious! After frying them, they’re crispy on the outside and tender inside. Soft and springy. Better than chicken.”
As he spoke, he smacked his lips twice, looking thoroughly satisfied and still craving more.
Recently, everyone in the village had been surviving mostly on vegetables cooked in oil. They had been longing for meat for quite some time. Hearing his description made several people practically drool.
After everyone gathered, they divided the search areas and split into pairs before setting off.
The area assigned to Jing Lin and Yan Fei happened to be near Zhao Zhiwen’s lotus pond. The two decided to first check on the marked lotus flowers before searching for additional ant nests.
After returning briefly to retrieve the lotus stalk they previously used that had been left at home, they headed straight toward the lotus flower closest to the shore.
Along the way, he observed that the weeds by the roadside seemed unchanged. However, when they reached the lotus pond, before they even got close to the flower, despite being nearsighted, Jing Lin could already see a patch of white surrounding it; a mass of dead fish floating belly-up, and the lotus leaves that had been lush and green the day before, along with the blooming lotus flower, had withered considerably.
Comparing it to the mark they had made the previous day, the blackened portion had grown by another finger-joint’s length.
The terrifying rate at which it stole vitality convinced Jing Lin that if the black lotus was left alone, the entire pond of lotus flowers and fish would be drained of life within just a few more days. The pond was some distance from the surrounding fields. Once it finished stealing all the vitality from the pond, would this ability spread and continue affecting the farmland? And what about people?
He had touched the lotus twice already and felt no discomfort so far, but what if something happened later? The thought was too frightening to dwell on.
After sharing his theories and concerns with Yan Fei, Yan Fei, whose reach was longer, asked for the hoe. He tried to hook the lotus over and cut it off with a shovel.
However, the moment he hooked the lotus stem, Yan Fei froze. He could not move it at all. No matter how hard he pulled on the hoe handle, the lotus remained completely motionless. He tapped at it with the blade, but it left no mark whatsoever. It could not even scrape off one of the tiny thorns. When the hoe struck the petals, it felt as though it had hit a sheet of iron. The flower was even harder than the poisonous ants they had eliminated the previous day.
Jing Lin tried as well. It felt like a tug-of-war between a person on one side and an elephant on the other.
In the end, they had no choice but to give up for the time being and planned to ask the strong Yan Lu to try after all the ant nests had been cleared.
After spending more than an hour searching the fields, the two found over a dozen ant nests and marked each one. They then went to find Zhao Zhiwen and Yan Lu in the fields and told them about the lotus flower. Their tasks were nearly finished anyway, so before long, all four of them headed to the lotus pond together.
Unfortunately, even Yan Lu’s strength, which she had always been proud of, proved completely useless against the lotus flower.

Finally, they reported the matter to Ma Renshan and asked him to warn the villagers to stay away from the lotus pond whenever possible. After hearing the news, Ma Renshan became even more worried. First, there had been the poisonous ants, and now the blackened lotus flowers. Who knew what other strange things might appear in the future?
That afternoon, clouds thickened across the sky, and dry thunder began to rumble. Everyone hurried to destroy all the ant nests. Fortunately, no more poisonous ants appeared. They did, however, find many ant eggs. This time Big Mouth Zhang could not take them all, so several villagers who enjoyed eating such things divided them among themselves. Jing Lin, Yan Fei, and the others could not bring themselves to eat them, so they declined.
By evening, Jing Lin told Zhao Chenghuai’s family that he intended to set up a Spirit-Locking Array for them. He explained its functions and benefits as well.
Although Jing Lin had purchased yellow talisman paper some time ago, Zhao Chenghuai had never questioned what he had been doing with it. He trusted Jing Lin completely. When he heard that the Spirit-Locking Array could help improve his family’s health, he happily encouraged Jing Lin to proceed.
As Jing Lin arranged the formation, Zhao Zhiwen and the others watched him perform an unusual series of steps for the first time. The movements were strange but not comical. Instead, they carried an air of solemnity and sanctity that unconsciously made the observers grow serious and become immersed in the process.
After a busy day, Zhou Yu invited Jing Lin and Le Le to stay for dinner as thanks for the effort he had put into setting up the formation. Though the meal consisted only of simple porridge and side dishes, the warm atmosphere of a family eating together made it enjoyable. Afterward, Jing Lin sat and chatted with Zhao Chenghuai and his wife for a while. Before long, the thunder grew louder, accompanied by wind and flashes of lightning. Seeing that a heavy storm was about to arrive, Jing Lin took Le Le home.
They had barely returned when large raindrops began falling. The wind drove the rain toward the house. Jing Lin shut the door, and the gusts battered the rolling shutter outside, making loud banging sounds like someone pounding on the door.
He lit an oil lamp and heated water for a bath. After bathing with Le Le, the two returned to their room. It was still early, and Le Le was busy playing with Duckie, so there was no need for a bedtime story as usual. With nothing else to do, Jing Lin continued cultivating the Lesser Vast Heaven Heart Method.
After silently reciting the cultivation incantation for a while, all of Jing Lin’s consciousness soon entered a profound state. He watched as spiritual qi gathered by the technique poured into his body. Unlike the spiritual qi from his morning practice, the qi now flowing in was tinged with purple and streaked with flashes of brilliant white.
It was like… what was it like? While cultivating, Jing Lin vaguely wondered. After a long moment, he realized it resembled the lightning outside.
During his previous two cultivation sessions, the spiritual qi he absorbed had always been tinged with purple, leading him to believe this was the norm. Only now did he begin to wonder if that assumption was actually incorrect.
These thoughts merely drifted through his mind in passing. As more and more spiritual qi flowed into him, Jing Lin began to feel a faint pain spreading through his body.
He thought something might be wrong, and the urge to stop briefly surfaced. However, he immediately dismissed it. A sudden craving deep within him told him that he absolutely could not stop now. After hesitating for only an instant, Jing Lin calmed himself once more and focused wholeheartedly on circulating the cultivation technique.
He did not know how much time had passed. Eventually, the spiritual qi no longer carried any purple or brilliant white coloration. Everything he absorbed became milky white. Only then did he end this cultivation session. The thunder outside had ceased, the lightning was gone, and only the gentle sound of rain remained.
He examined the milky-white cloud of qi within his brow. Floating inside it were occasional streaks of purple that drifted through the edge of the cloud like wandering dragons, sometimes mixed with flashes of dazzling white. During today’s cultivation, the purple qi containing the bright-white flashes had gradually become scarcer. Once the storm ended, the spiritual qi he absorbed had turned completely milky white. Only now did Jing Lin begin to understand the connection.
Purple qi came from the east, the direction of the rising sun. Both of his previous cultivation sessions had begun just before sunrise. The purple qi he absorbed then likely came from the sun itself. As for tonight’s purple qi mixed with brilliant white, it was most likely power that had escaped from the lightning.
To verify his theory, Jing Lin carefully reread the “Early Winter” section of the cultivation manual. Eventually, he found a note explaining that the spiritual power of heaven and earth took many forms, and ordinary spiritual qi was only one of them. The power of the sun and the power of lightning were also forms of spiritual qi, and both were superior to ordinary milky-white spiritual qi. The pain he had felt when first absorbing lightning qi had actually been a forging process, tempering his meridians and making them stronger.
The room remained lit. Le Le had already fallen asleep, holding Duckie in his arms. Duckie stared at Jing Lin with its little black bean-like eyes. The moment it noticed Jing Lin looking back, it quickly buried its head in Le Le’s arms and pretended to be asleep.
Although Duckie was a goose, it was quite different from ordinary domestic geese. In Jing Lin’s experience, geese relieved themselves wherever they pleased. Yet Duckie spent most of its time curled up in the cardboard box Le Le had prepared for it, and after all this time, the box remained clean and odorless. Jing Lin had never once seen goose droppings anywhere in the house.
Every evening, when Le Le took a bath, he also bathed Duckie. As a result, Duckie was an exceptionally clean goose and even carried the scent of body wash. Since Duckie possessed intelligence, Jing Lin did not insist that it sleep in the cardboard box. The real issue was that it was still so small. He worried that either he or Le Le might accidentally roll over and crush it during the night.
Therefore, even though Duckie clung to Le Le and pretended to sleep, it could not escape Jing Lin’s grasp. He picked it up, placed it in the cardboard box, and lightly tapped its beak with a finger, telling it to behave and sleep there.
Duckie was obedient that night. It did not shoot Jing Lin any annoyed looks. When Jing Lin told it to sleep in the box, it simply settled down.
Before long, Jing Lin extinguished the oil lamp and closed his eyes to sleep. In the darkness, he failed to notice a faint stream of purple light flicker across the feathers on Duckie’s back inside the cardboard box.
