Chapter 39.2
For Wu Wangfei and Liang Pi, the investment might’ve been a great wave, a life-changing event that at long last let them see the hope of fulfilling their dream, but for Lin Jingzhe, it was naught but a small ripple on the water surface.
Although one million yuan was not a small amount, for the current him, it was not worth a mention. He told Liang Pi that they’d cooperate “if there’s nothing inappropriate,” by which he meant he was certain to do so if there were no accidents. It was meant to be a long-term investment and the groundwork for potential future development.
Others might not be able to tell but actually, Lin Jingzhe’s self-esteem was not very high. In his previous life, he wasted his youth; although later, he worked hard, determined to achieve success, it was not easy because his lack of solid foundations gave him no competitive edge. He truly felt that he was not smart enough, especially that he lacked insight and judgment, and all the regrets of his previous life seemed to confirm these flaws. As such, even though he somehow got a second chance, he still considered himself to be the same ordinary, mediocre man, the only difference being that he knew some of what was going to happen in the future.
Depending on this knowledge, such as which piece of land would increase in value and which stock will soar, he might be able to get some advantage at the beginning, but after that?
Business competition would be getting more and more fierce and the opportunities would be dwindling. His “prophetic ability” would gradually become useless. Then what? Was he supposed to just sit back and rest on his laurels, idling his fortune away?
Investing in some enterprises with good prospects was great insurance for the future. Those one- or two-million investments were akin to bets; if he lost, he lost, but if he won, they’d surely give him back tens or hundreds times the return.
Once this idea appeared in Lin Jingzhe’s mind, it refused to leave. When he was boarding the coach to Changqing Province the next day, he was still scouring his memory for domestic companies that were well-known in the future.
Yan City’s “real estate alliance” gathered almost all of the small and reputable real estate enterprises. The investigation trip to Changqing Province seemed to be an “official” group activity and pretty much all the members were attending—even Dai Gaofeng, the chairman of New Era Group and the alliance’s unofficial leader, came in person. At present, the drive to Changqing Province was still neither easy nor pleasant, so as per Dai Gaofeng’s proposition, everyone decided to forgo cars and travel together by coach.
It was New Era Group that bought Lin Jingzhe’s land at Shiku Lane, paying 160 million yuan. Being able to easily take out such a big sum showed just how deep-pocketed and influential it was. Therefore, all those bosses, despite having enough power to shake Yan City’s business circle if they joined hands, got on the coach without raising a word of protest.
Lin Jingzhe was undoubtedly the youngest among this group of entrepreneurs. Adding to that his exceptional looks and bearing, he was especially eye-catching. Dai Gaofeng clearly was quite impressed with him; upon meeting, he shook hands and greeted Lin Jingzhe, and later, he specially arranged for him to sit in the frontmost row of seats, which were the most convenient and had the best view.
Deng Mai was very popular—right after getting on the bus, a group of bosses dragged him to the back rows to chat. Lin Jingzhe exchanged polite greetings with the people sitting nearby, then quietly sat in his seat, looking through the information on Changqing Province.
Changqing was a large province close to Yan City. It used to be very poor, with barely any sense of existence among the other provinces. It was not until the rich mineral resources were discovered there that the situation began to improve. Since then, it gradually transformed into a province abundant with factories and with an industry-driven economy.
Before the news of the construction of the highway, few real estate businessmen in Yan City cared about this place, but now, it’d become a tasty treat everyone wanted a piece of. Not to mention the inspection organized by the Yan City’s “real estate alliance,” even a special booklet introducing the province had been printed. It was quite detailed, to the point of listing the previous Changqing Party Committee Secretaries on top of the current one.
Reportedly, since the construction of the highway was announced, the land price in Changqing City, the capital of Changqing Province, exploded. Although it was still nowhere close to the price in Yan City, unlike there, it was a “virgin land”! Moreover, the developable range was much larger than in the relatively mature Yan City, and the prices were bound to rise sharply after the highway was completed. If one could seize the opportunity, they’d likely reap huge profits in the future.
Lin Jingzhe, however, wasn’t really interested. As someone with no family background and lacking sufficient financial assets, who barely managed to squeeze his foot in Yan City’s business circle, he had neither strength nor energy to spare to eye other provinces.
What’s more, he was well aware that the real estate market in Yan City was far from being saturated. Others might not know it, but how could he not know? The ring roads would continue to be added along with viaducts linking them together, expanding urban areas, and as long as the house was within the bounds of Yan City, even if it was the outermost suburb, the price would never be lower than in any provincial capital.
So he just looked through the booklet casually, concentrating mainly on his peripheral vision, observing the scene inside and outside the coach.
When almost everyone who was going had already arrived, a car came rushing up. It stopped next to the bus, and the man who got out made the people inside the bus quiet a little.
“Hey, Xiao Chi is here!” Lin Jingzhe heard someone in the back call out in a low voice. This spurred the change of the conversation topic to Xiao Chi and the more quick-witted people hurriedly putting out their cigarettes.
After Xiao Chi got out of his car, he saw cigarette buts all over the ground, and his forehead wrinkled in a frown. Dai Gaofeng went over to meet him, patting him on the shoulder as a hello. “It’s almost twenty degrees today, why do you have such a thick jacket?”
They were actually distant relatives. Xiao Chi greeted him, “Uncle Dai,” and adjusted the leather jacket hanging over his elbow. “I get cold easily.”
To the point of needing a winter jacket on such a warm day? Dai Gaofeng looked worriedly at Xiao Chi’s seemingly robust and healthy body, wondering if he should get some tonic for the boy after they came back.
As soon as Xiao Chi looked up, his sharp eyes instantly noticed Lin Jingzhe watching him from behind the bus window.
Lin Jingzhe was a bit speechless at the sight of the jacket hanging over Xiao Chi’s elbow but still nodded a greeting to him.
Perhaps because the forecast predicted rain during the day, the sunrise that morning was particularly gorgeous. It made Lin Jingzhe look as if a bright halo enveloped his body. Xiao Chi stared at him in a bit of a daze, and his hand holding the prayer beads unconsciously tightened its grip.
He chatted with Dai Gaofeng absently, but his gaze never left Lin Jingzhe. He also nodded slightly, returning the greeting.
The look in Xiao Chi’s eyes was completely ordinary, yet at the same time, it seemed as if there was a fire burning in them. For some reason, this gaze made Lin Jingzhe a bit flustered. He instinctively looked away, then felt puzzled as to why he would do so, but when he looked back, Xiao Chi had already turned his head.
A higher vantage point could sometimes give you a unique perspective. Because their relationship had been quite hostile before the cooperation, Lin Jingzhe hadn’t really paid much attention to the other man’s appearance. Now, he took an opportunity to look at this person properly.
In the large and empty parking lot, only two people were standing, with brilliant morning glow sprinkling down on them just like the lighting in a photography studio. When Xiao Chi slightly lowered his head, the light outlined his chiseled profile, making it look like something out of a classical painting.
He was really handsome, especially with Dai Gaofeng serving as a contrast.
However, most of the people in the bus were middle-aged men, and what they cared about was not the beauty of the scene, but Xiao Chi and Dai Gaofeng’s apparently friendly relationship. Dai Gaofeng was a difficult person to get close to, yet he was especially kindly disposed towards both Xiao Chi and Flux Realty and gave them preferential treatment.
All the discussions had to pause for a moment, however, when an engine’s almost deafening roar reverberated through the sky, announcing the arrival of the last person. A bright-yellow sports car, which was probably the only one in China at the moment as it certainly didn’t enter the country through regular channels, rushed into the parking lot and charged towards Xiao Chi and Dai Gaofeng.
As the people in the coach exclaimed in alarm, there came the screech of tires and the car swung its tail, stopping right before it could slam into Xiao Chi.
The driver’s door opened and Qi Kai climbed out. “Hey, it’s Uncle Dai! Sorry for being late,” he said ebulliently, leaning over the open door.
Dai Gaofeng’s face was pale with fright. When he came back to himself, he said unhappily, covering up his discomfort, “You stinky kid, so it turned out to be you.”
“Ha ha ha!” Qi Kai didn’t seem to notice Dai Gaofeng’s anger at all. He stepped forward to give the older man a hug, then his eyes fell on Xiao Chi. “Oh, you’re here too, Mr. Xiao?”
Unlike Dai Gaofeng, Xiao Chi hadn’t batted an eyelid. Perfectly calm, he gave Qi Kai a small nod of acknowledgment. “Mr. Qi.”
“I’m sorry, I was driving a bit too fast just now. I didn’t scare you, did I?” Qi Kai approached Xiao Chi with an apologetic smile, scrutinizing the opponent’s expression.
Xiao Chi met his gaze and smiled. “Why would I be scared? It’s not like you would dare to run me over.”
Qi Kai’s next words froze in his mouth, his short-lived sense of victory disappearing in a flash. He let out a forced laugh and turned away.
The bus fell silent for a moment because of this short but surging with undercurrents clash, then the conversations resumed, even more animated than before. Thanks to the whispers behind, Lin Jingzhe really learned a lot about Flux Realty and Dominion Properties’ grievances.
Actually, Lin Jingzhe had been acquainted with Qi Kai. In his last life, he’d seen him several times, and those meetings made quite an impression. As he remembered, this guy was an exceptionally arrogant and domineering young master. According to the rumors, he’d also done some profitable business outside the capital that earned him a fortune. At one time, Lin Jingzhe’s disreputable group of buddies worshipped him as their idol.
But that was about it—Qi Kai probably came from a much more elite background and had almost no intersection with Lin Jingzhe’s circle. Lin Jingzhe didn’t know much about this person, however, a few years later, he heard that Qi Kai slipped up pretty badly. His family went to great lengths to send him out of the country, but later, the family member who was protecting him also had some kind of accident. In short, Qi Kai didn’t come to a good end. This incident shook the group of young people who were mingling with Lin Jingzhe; they sighed about it for a long time, and even their daily activities became restrained for a while.
But something was clearly different than in his last life. At this time, wasn’t Qi Kai supposed to be making a fortune in other provinces? Why did those company bosses say that something happened in Qunnan and he had to slink back to Yan City with his tail between his legs?
And in this life, he’d met this person much earlier as two-thirds of New Beginnings Real Estate’s land had been bought from Dominion Properties. That said, Qi Kai’s attitude on the day they signed the sales contract was very arrogant—he obviously looked down on an unknown little company like New Beginnings. It was other people that came to meet and discuss everything with Lin Jingzhe, and he only showed his face at the end of the whole process.
Lin Jingzhe had heard much about Qi Kai’s arrogance, but only then did he really understand just how arrogant he was. He shook his head inwardly—with this kind of character, it was no wonder that this person would stumble and fall so badly in his last life.
But right now, the other party’s power and influence were still there. When Qi Kai approached the coach’s door, the lively discussion inside died down. He stepped in and stopped at the front of the car with his hands in his pockets, scanning the surroundings. As his gaze fell on Lin Jingzhe sitting in the first row, his expression changed.
“Yo, President Lin!”
Helpless, Lin Jingzhe had no choice but to greet him: “Mr. Qi, long time no see.”
“Well, I’ve actually wanted to see you, but it seems you’ve been pretty busy? You never had any time to meet.” Qi Kai let out a peculiar chuckle. “You’ve got one over me with the land at Shiku Lane. Well then, let’s talk about cooperating on the 2nd Middle Road…”
As he spoke, he stepped forward and moved to sit in the empty seat beside Lin Jingzhe. However, before he lowered himself into the seat, his back was pushed, hard enough that he staggered and almost fell in the aisle.
Qi Kai’s eyes widened in shock; he couldn’t believe that someone would dare to treat him this way. He stood up straight with the help of a person in the nearby seat, then turned around to tear into whoever did this but saw a face he didn’t expect.
He opened his mouth, but he couldn’t attack the other party directly no matter how angry he was. “Mr. Xiao, what are you…?” he forced out through clenched teeth.
Xiao Chi calmly placed the half-folded leather jacket on his knees and put his prayer beads on top of it. Then, he glanced at Qi Kai, his expression a little surprised as if he’d just noticed him. “Mr. Qi, what’s the matter?”
It was obvious that this person was deliberately making trouble for him! Qi Kai stared at Xiao Chi and took a deep breath. He didn’t want to give up just like this, so he said, forcing himself to keep his composure, “Mr. Xiao, could you perhaps move to another seat? There are plenty of empty ones, and Mr. Lin and I have some business matters to discuss…”
After the plan to build a business district in the north of the city was announced, he’d suffered quite the damage because of letting go of the land at Shiku Lane, but that wasn’t enough to discourage him. Soon, the triangle plot smack in the middle of the new business district caught his eye. However, though Lin Jingzhe was young, he was as slippery as those old foxes. Despite trying several times, Qi Kai always failed to catch his tail and could only watch the other party act stupid. This was a hard-to-come-by opportunity; whether by intimidation or bribery, he had to grab this piece of land with extraordinary potential.
After all, though he’d been down on his luck lately, there was still his grandfather. As long as he brought up his grandfather, he didn’t believe Lin Jingzhe would dare not to give face to the old man.
He had already spoken very politely, but Xiao Chi didn’t give him any face, staying where he was and not budging. “I think you remembered it wrong, Mr. Qi? Before he came here, Mr. Lin had already made an appointment with me.”
He shot a sideways glance at Lin Jingzhe. Lin Jingzhe hurriedly cooperated, leaning close to Xiao Chi to show their friendly relationship, and said to Qi Kai, “Indeed, Mr. Qi, I’m sorry. Let’s talk about whatever you want to talk about after we arrive in Changqing.”
Qi Kai was reluctant, but since they were in public, he had to keep up the pretense of civility. Holding in his anger, he gave a nod brimming with menace and walked to sit in the back of the coach.
Lin Jingzhe breathed a sigh of relief and lowered the hand he’d put on Xiao Chi’s shoulder. “Thank you,” he said softly.
If not for Xiao Chi’s timely rescue, he would’ve been in for a tough battle. He could avoid Qi Kai, but he couldn’t directly offend him. If the person next to him was anyone else, even Deng Mai, they would’ve definitely been driven away.
When Lin Jingzhe waved his arm, Xiao Chi caught a whiff of a familiar scent. Striving to maintain his usual calm appearance, he let that slender arm go and resisted the impulse to hold the young man’s hand. “It’s nothing,” he replied, voice deep.
This was what a true comrade in arms was!
Lin Jingzhe finally looked upon Xiao Chi with a favorable eye. They might have had their disagreements, but as they say, true friendship comes from fighting!
He thus discarded the impressions he previously formed. Xiao Chi was actually quite a decent guy. He might be a bit eccentric, but he was very reliable in business matters. Also, he was willing to go against Qi Kai to help Lin Jingzhe out, which proved he must regard Lin Jingzhe as a friend. As the saying went, It’s better to make friends than to make enemies, and there was also their business cooperation; in short, easing up their relationship had much more benefits than disadvantages.
So, let bygones be bygones!
After arriving in Changqing City, the receptionist distributed room keys to everyone. The conditions were relatively rough as there were no luxury hotels here, only the municipal party committee guest house. Each person got a room for himself, and to distinguish them, the key tags had different colors.
At the time, Lin Jingzhe was pondering letting go of old grudges. He stuffed it absently in his pocket and continued discussing the development of the triangular plot with Xiao Chi.
Xiao Chi didn’t talk much, but his gaze never left Lin Jingzhe when Lin Jingzhe was speaking and the look in his eyes showed that he was listening properly. After letting go of his prejudice, Lin Jingzhe thought that this person was actually really polite, and his real character aside, at least his demeanor was serious. Furthermore, his mind was sharp; once in a while, with a few words, he cut straight to the heart of an issue. In short, he was an outstanding businessman with a discerning vision and a worthy rival.
He thought magnanimously, they were both men, so what if they kissed? Teenage boys played more than this—didn’t his roommates like to touch the fatty Lu Xiaojiang’s chest? A kiss was nothing! And it was so long ago that Xiao Chi must’ve long forgotten about it. Wasn’t it petty of him to still be so hung up on this?
Lin Jingzhe tended to doze off in cars and speaking for so long tired him out. As the bus steadily drove down the national highway, he fell asleep before he knew it.
Xiao Chi, sitting next to him, was stiff. He dared not move, for fear that the head lightly resting on his shoulder would slip down.
He stared at Lin Jingzhe’s mouth, which opened slightly in sleep. Two white teeth and a pink tongue tip were faintly visible inside.
What should I do? I want to touch him! Will that wake him up?
And also! The leather jacket on my knees is too warm! I feel hot!

They’re not long (about 10-15 minutes each) but they explain in a simple and accessible way how the Chinese economy transformed. It’s not some in-depth study, but the guy running this channel clearly knows what he’s talking about, so you might want to check out his other videos (this is not a paid promotion XD).

That’s why I typically drape my jacket over the back of the chair if I know I’m not going to need it, but want to keep it handy in case it gets cold. If there’s a luggage rack, though, then I’d rather stow it away.
