Chapter 206
However, Lang Yan didn’t end up waiting long. On the third day after receiving the message, Axiang and his group arrived at Qi Ze City. Coming back with them were Azhang and the dozen or so beastmen who had previously been exchanged to the Lion-Wolf Tribe.
When Axiang saw the massive connected pit between the two city walls, he was still a little stunned. Azhang had already explained its purpose to him, but the pit bottom was still damp, and the tools that needed to be installed hadn’t been placed yet. With only this bare framework, Axiang couldn’t imagine what the finished effect would be.
Climbing into Qi Ze City via the rope ladder hanging in midair, he saw Achu already waiting on the wall with several others. After a few brief greetings, the group headed straight to the meeting room.
Chen Qi did not attend this meeting, but Aze did.
Since the pit couldn’t be prepared yet, Chen Qi was currently leading a group to reinforce the old cellar used for hiding. He reorganized the interior structure, making even the ventilation more concealed. Inside was enough water and food to supply several hundred people for two to three months. Around the chamber, he placed special spices made from figs, and the area around the school was thick with ghost-needle flowers, now in full bloom. No matter how sensitive a hyena-drake’s nose was, once the beastmen hid several meters underground, it would be impossible for them to detect the scent of anyone inside.
The meeting didn’t last long—mostly administrative matters between the two tribes. Within an hour, everyone exchanged the latest updates and dispersed.
Azhang had been away for months, so there were many things he needed to catch up on. Axiang handed off the arrangements for their return trip tomorrow to Ayan, who had come with him, and then left to find his own mate.
Lang Yan helped water the patches of medicinal herbs growing in Chen Qi’s yard. After the last harvest, they had collected many seeds of the heatgrass, so Chen Qi had expanded the planting area. In addition to heatgrass, there was also a plot of wild ginseng. Wild ginseng’s growing cycle was much longer than heatgrass and required almost no care—just occasional weeding and fertilizing.
Baby Chen Nian—nicknamed “little bun”—was placed inside a bamboo playpen, somewhat similar to the one that had once held the snow geese, except without a top. Inside were soft furs and a bamboo mat. The bamboo strips had all been carefully sanded by Aze so they wouldn’t scratch the child.

Only a few months old, the little bun was still at the “eat-and-sleep” stage. After finishing the watering, Lang Yan returned to the playpen and found the baby, eyes closed, blowing little milk bubbles. Amused, he poked the baby’s soft, fair cheek. After tidying up the tools, Lang Yan glanced toward the city gate. It had been months since he’d seen Axiang. Knowing Axiang was busy with important matters, he forced himself to suppress the sudden urge to run out and meet him.
“Lang Yan?”
A strange voice pulled him back. At the gate stood a gray-dusted male beastman. Lang Yan had seen him a few times while out and about, but had never spoken to him and didn’t know his name.
“You are…?”
“My name is Ai Li, also from the Lion-Wolf Tribe.” Ai Li’s face showed little expression, but his polite explanation made Lang Yan feel more favorably toward him.
“Are you looking for Chen Qi? He’s not home. If you need him, you might have to go to the school.”
The Lion-Wolf Tribe’s numbers were large, and since Lang Yan often stayed home, he didn’t recognize most of them. But as the chief’s mate, everyone recognized him. So he wasn’t surprised that someone from the Lion-Wolf Tribe knew his name.
“I’m not here for Chen Qi. I’m here to look for you.”
“For me?” Lang Yan asked in surprise.
Whether from Qi Ze City or the Lion-Wolf Tribe, Beastmen were constantly coming by to look for Chen Qi—Lang Yan was used to it. He assumed this man was the same, never imagining someone would come specifically to see him.
“Can I come in and talk?”
Ai Li already knew that, at this hour, only Lang Yan and the baby would be home, so he wasn’t worried about awkwardly running into Aze or Chen Qi.
“Oh, of course.” Lang Yan hurried forward to open the fence gate. He didn’t invite the other man inside the house, but instead gestured for him to sit at the table beneath the fig tree. He picked up the teapot on the table and poured Ai Li a cup of tea.
The tea had long since gone cold after sitting out half the day, but since it was the height of summer, beastmen didn’t like hot drinks anyway. Though serving cold tea to a guest would normally be impolite, no beastman minded under weather like this.

Ai Li took a light sip of the floral tea, faintly sweet. He really liked these flower teas—they quenched thirst and tasted far better than plain boiled water. Back when the red-fruit trees in Qi Ze City were blooming, he had collected many fresh blossoms to dry and brew. Unfortunately, ever since the outer wall was completed, going in and out of the tribe had become troublesome. Ai Li hadn’t stepped beyond the plains in months.
“Did you come looking for me for something?” Lang Yan poured himself a cup as well before finally asking.
Ai Li took out a small booklet from the cloth pouch at his waist. Drawings of various medicinal plants filled its pages—not many, only about a dozen—but each illustration was detailed and even colored, making the herbs instantly recognizable. Next to each drawing were notes in small handwriting, explaining the plants’ main effects. Unfortunately, Ai Li had never had time to properly study reading and writing, so he couldn’t understand any of it.
He opened the booklet and pointed to several herbs—heatgrass, wild ginseng—plants that Qi Ze City had few of, and with very limited seed reserves.
Puzzled, Lang Yan followed the direction of his finger. Before he could ask what Ai Li meant, Ai Li got straight to the point, “I’ve been helping tend the crops out on the wasteland for several months now. You know these plants only grow from seeds. They’re hard to find. If our tribe could grow some ourselves, then when people get hurt or sick, we wouldn’t have to worry anymore.”
Lang Yan lifted his head, studying Ai Li’s serious expression. “You mean… you want Qi Ze City to give us some seeds to take back and plant? But it’s nearly winter. Isn’t it already past planting season?”
“Have you been to the greenhouse in the past few days? When it was first finished, they tested it—it can keep the room within a stable temperature range. That’s also why people in Qi Ze City want to raise animals there. We can’t build something like that right now, but growing a few plants indoors is still possible. I’ve learned a lot about planting these past weeks. If it works, we can harvest a batch of seeds before next summer. Then we’ll have enough time to grow two full rounds of crops during summer.”
“There aren’t many of these seeds, though, are they? I heard Axiang didn’t bring anything to trade this time. What can we exchange for them?”
Lang Yan frowned lightly, hesitating. Qi Ze City probably didn’t lack anything their tribe could offer now.
“It’s not a trade.” Ai Li shook his head. “These seeds—they’re all kept by Chen Qi. He once prepared a portion of heatgrass to give to our tribe, but since they don’t grow many to begin with, the amount was small. If something like last time happens again—people falling ill with fever one after another—that bit of heatgrass won’t be enough.”
“I’ve heard,” he continued, “that to prevent accidents wiping out their crops, Chen Qi always sets aside some backup seeds. I’ve observed these past weeks—the survival rate of the new herbs is very good. After the first snow, before winter fully settles, a batch should mature. There’ll be no shortage of seeds then. So… the stored seeds Chen Qi set aside might as well be given to us first. And if he insists on a trade, I can bring whatever he wants next summer. We can treat this as receiving the goods in advance.”

Listening to Ai Li carefully lay out his plan, Lang Yan fell silent.
“You want me to ask Chen Qi for them? If you already had this idea, why not speak to him yourself?”
Having said everything in one breath, Ai Li felt his throat dry. He drained his cup and wiped the moisture from the corner of his mouth.
“My relationship with him… isn’t very good. You’re the chief’s mate and interact with Chen Qi more. It’ll be easier if you bring it up.”
“I’ll talk it over with Axiang first. Qi Ze City doesn’t have much of these herbs either. Even if we can’t get the seeds, don’t worry too much. Once we’re done with the tribal construction, we can send people out to search next summer.” Lang Yan refilled Ai Li’s empty cup as he spoke, gently reassuring him.
Ai Li nodded. Having said everything he came to say, he stood up to leave.
Inside the fence, the little bun had already woken. A few months old, the baby beastman could crawl now, and the playpen was several times larger than his cradle. He toddled around the edges on all fours, wide dark eyes watching the two adults talking outside. Noticing one of them getting ready to leave, he babbled loudly, saying who-knows-what.
Ai Li’s gaze lingered on the little one for a moment—complex, unreadable—before he pushed open the fence gate and left with long strides.
By the time Axiang finished his meeting and arrived, Lang Yan was already feeding the little bun freshly warmed milk fruit. Seeing his mate holding an unfamiliar baby, Axiang felt his heart jolt—but luckily, after so long apart, Lang Yan didn’t notice his odd reaction.
Still, Lang Yan hadn’t forgotten what Ai Li said. After exchanging a few affectionate words with Axiang, he briefly summarized Ai Li’s request. Axiang thought for only a moment before deciding they should simply ask Chen Qi for his opinion once he returned.
And indeed, when Chen Qi heard their explanation later, he didn’t hesitate at all. He went back to his room, took out all the backup seed reserves he had stored, and handed the medicinal seeds over. They were scarce, yes—but not irreplaceable. Besides, the herbs growing in the fields were doing well. Chen Qi didn’t mind giving up a few seeds.
