Crossing to Live in the Wilderness Plains 016

Chapter 16

Ka Luo took out a bone-knife that was wrapped in leather from his pocket. The bone-knife was very white and smooth, and it was obvious that it had been carefully sharpened. He grabbed a handful of yellow weeds. Obviously, using the bone-knife to deal with the weeds was more than enough. With a swish of the bone-knife, the weeds were all cut down.

Chen Qi marveled that the bone-knife could be so sharp. “How did you sharpen this knife?”

Seeing that Chen Qi deigned to ask him questions, Ka Luo could not help popping out his chest as he generously explained, “There is a kind of rough, black stone in the Chishui River which can be used to grind the bone slowly to sharpen it.” Then he snorted softly and continued, “It’s a very laborious task. If you just grind it casually, it won’t have the same effect as mine.”

A rough black stone? If it can be used to sharpen things, it should be something similar to a whetstone. After understanding it, Chen Qi bowed his head and continued his work.

Ka Luo noticed that Chen Qi didn’t continue asking questions and felt a little unhappy again. He was also a little envious when he saw the knife in Chen Qi’s hand. He’d asked Aze for the horn before, but he hadn’t given it to him. Apparently, after getting a male, the younger brother didn’t matter anymore. Ka Luo roughly yanked the weeds with his hands and made loud, rustling noises.

Chen Qi looked back questioningly and saw Ka Luo’s expression was bad again. Black question marks couldn’t help appearing across his face. How did he offend the little ancestor this time? Wasn’t he fine just now?

Ake approached Chen Qi while dealing with the weeds and whispered, “He is jealous that you have Aze’s dragon-horn blade. He’s asked Aze for it several times and Aze wouldn’t give it to him.”

Chen Qi looked down at his modified knife and asked tentatively, “Shall I, in turn, give it to him?”

“Don’t.” Ake waved a hand. “If you give it Ka Luo, Aze will probably get angry.”

“Then what should I do?” If he didn’t give it to him, Ka Luo would be angry. If he did give it to him, then Aze would get angry. What could he do?

Ake smiled. He had to say that Ake’s smile was quite good looking and led people to feel at ease. “Do you think Ka Luo appears like he doesn’t like you?”

Chen Qi nodded hesitantly.

“It’s okay. He’s not really angry with you. He’s just angry with the past.” Ake gave a paradoxical explanation and went to Ka Luo’s side to help him deal with a small sapling that he could not cut with the bone-knife.

Chen Qi also did not dwell on it. It was fine as long as Ka Luo was not angry with him. As for the reason, he would know when it was time to know. He was not a busybody anyway. The most important thing at present was to finish the house. After all, all other problems were insignificant in the face of the problem of survival. Winter was coming and he had no time to waste.

Needless to say, the piece of land, that looked about 100 square meters large, was soon cleared with their help. Chen Qi tied the cut grass into bundles using the banyan roots and neatly packed them beside the house. These were all materials that could be burned and must not be wasted.

Ake was massaging Ka Luo’s arm, while Ka Luo haughtily glared at him in return, although it was quite enjoyable. Chen Qi didn’t bother to pay attention to the cringy couple since he was sorting out a small pile of green weeds. They were mostly plants that Chen Qi didn’t recognise and didn’t look like they could be eaten, but there were two among them that looked very much like a plant Chen Qi had often seen before— the thistle.

The name of this weed was one Chen Qi learned about while he was researching for a project, because its flowers were purple, and although small, they were very beautiful. Although the two stalks in his hand had not yet bloomed, they had long leaves with thin thorns and Chen Qi could hardly be mistaken. The main reason was that these weeds were more common than dandelions and could be found growing all over the place in the community he’d used to live in. Moreover, not only could they be eaten as a dish, but more importantly, they had a hemostatic function. In this place where there was no medicine at all, Chen Qi was very happy to find this little hemostatic plant.

Chen Qi couldn’t wait to test the thistle’s effect. He picked up a stone that looked clean and brushed it lightly with some hay. Then he took two leaves from one of the thistles and mashed them carefully with the stone. The scratch on his hand from Azhang yesterday had not bled in a while, but the wound was still there. After returning, he’d changed the cloth and kept it wrapped all the time. Now, Chen Qi unwrapped the cloth, covered the wound with the crushed thistle leaves, and then rewrapped it with the cloth again. Just as he finished doing that, he saw Aze return with a warthog and something wrapped in cattail leaves in his hand.

Aze walked over to them, looked at Ka Luo with a little surprise, but asked Ake, “Why are you both here?”

“When I gave Uncle Ali the antelope meat for payment yesterday, He said that you might go to the Loya Forest to gather wool cocoons. So we came over.”

“Fortunately, we came over at the right time.” Ka Luo offered these words while looking at Chen Qi meaningfully.

“You’re back? What’s that in your hand?” Chen Qi carefully put the thistle into his pocket and changed the topic with a ha ha. The vulture incident was already over anyway. There was no need to let Aze know.

Aze happily lowered the warthog and opened the leaves to reveal a pile of potatoes still stained with soil. “I found two of the potato plants from yesterday. There were ten potatoes in total. We can continue to have meat and potato stew today.”

Ka Luo leaned in to take a look at what Aze was holding and asked curiously, “Meat and potato stew? What is that?”

En, you can stay for a while and eat it with us.” Chen Qi took the potatoes as he spoke to Ka Luo.

“Huh? Can we? Okay then. Ake, let’s eat here today.”

“Okay.” Ake patted Ka Luo’s head fondly.

Aze glared at Ake. He did not bring food over to eat, yet they will stay for a meal, and they didn’t even ask this home owner’s opinion.

Ake smiled and picked up the warthog from the ground. “You haven’t prepared your prey, right? I’ll take it to the Chishui River to deal with it.”

“Wait.” Chen Qi stopped Ake, who was about to head off after picking up the prey. “Don’t throw away the internal organs.” Before, Aze always directly threw away the viscera, but now they were not in the wild. Naturally, anything that could be eaten should be kept.

“Keep the internal organs? To eat them?” Ka Luo frowned. They had never eaten the innards before and no one had ever tried to eat them. Every time they hunted prey, they had to remove the entrails and head. Wouldn’t it be impossible to eat the prey if they left the innards in it?

“None of you have ever eaten them?”

The three of them all shook their heads.

Chen Qi tentatively asked, “Are you not allowed to eat them, or is it just that you haven’t eaten them?” After all, the people here worshipped animal gods. In some aspects, it was better to ask a little more clearly. If any taboo was violated, it would be troublesome.

“Just haven’t eaten them,” Aze replied. “The traditions passed down have always been to remove the entrails and heads of prey before eating. When the animals from the Dora Plains migrate back, we do not lack food. Also most of the internal organs of dragons are poisonous, so no one would usually try to eat them.”

“Then let’s try them today? Just leave the warthog’s heart and kidneys. Next time we’ll leave the other parts, too, if you think you can eat them. And if you can’t eat them, we can just throw them away.

Aze nodded. “Yes.” Ka Luo naturally didn’t have any objections. The two of them were just here to eat free food.

Finally, Ake lifted the warthog over his shoulder. Aze went back into the house and grabbed two pottery jars before the two of them left for the Chishui River. Before Aze left, Chen Qi also asked him to bring back a piece of the rough black stone that could be used to sharpen bone-knives if he saw one. Aze agreed. Then Chen Qi and Ka Luo went back into the house.

Chen Qi cleaned the potatoes to remove the soil and began peeling it with the knife. Ka Luo still felt a little awkward being alone with Chen Qi, but after he wandered around the room aimlessly for a bit, Chen Qi raised his head and asked, “Can you help me peel these potatoes?”

Ka Lu’s mouth twitched, but he didn’t say anything and sat down beside Chen Qi. He took out his bone-knife and with one chop, a big piece of the potato peel and flesh were sliced off. Ka Luo stared dazedly, slightly embarrassed, and glanced at Chen Qi’s expression. Chen Qi did not chastise the other party. Novices were bound to make mistakes. Chen Qi took the potato and demonstrated. “Look at how I do it, with less strength.”

After a short pause, Ka Luo imitated Chen Qi’s movements and made several attempts before he finally managed to do it a bit similarly. After successfully peeling a potato, Ka Luo could not help but smile at Chen Qi. Then he realized, in hindsight, that it was Chen Qi and withdrew his expression, feeling a little vexed.

Chen Qi looked at him with amusement. ”Then please peel the remaining potatoes. I’m going to handle the wild vegetables.” Ten potatoes were not many. Chen Qi had already dealt with four or five of them, and the rest he would leave to this awkward child to finish up on his own.

The dandelions had just blossomed and they were not too old. Chen Qi only needed to remove the leaves that were starting to yellow, while the flowers were stored separately. He planned to dry them so he could use them to make scented tea. Although Chen Qi had picked a large bundle of dandelions, he did not intend to finish it all in one meal. The three beastmen here had always been carnivorous. All he needed to do was to use a small handful of them to stir-fry with meat slices. The rest could be left for the next meal and for tomorrow. He wasn’t sure when he’d find more edible wild vegetables after the dandelions were finished.

The potatoes were all processed. Chen Qi took a few peeled potatoes and sliced them into shreds. These could be used to make stir-fried pork with potatoes. The rest could be chopped into pieces for the meat and potato stew. Unfortunately, the only seasoning here was salt, the oil for frying could only be warthog fat, and there were only a few pieces of the perilla leaves left. There were also two pieces of wild ginger remaining, which although they were not big, could still last them a few days if used sparingly.

Chen Qi was about to finish all the preparatory work when the two females came back. Chen Qi wasn’t sure if he was imagining it, but he felt that Aze’s expression seemed a bit strange upon returning from the trip. He just silently put down the pottery jars filled with water and looked at Chen Qi a bit hesitantly, but said nothing.

Ake put the wart-pork on a piece of clean hide and brought back a pig heart and kidney. Chen Qi was very satisfied when he saw the clean ingredients.
