Crossing to Live in the Wilderness Plains 006

Chapter 6

Because they encountered the hyena-drake at noon, Aze took a detour and it wasn’t until evening that he stopped by a river. This was Chishui River, a tributary of Sanchen River, the largest river in the Dora Plains. A group of wildebeests were busy crossing the river.

Most places with water sources were gathering spots for animals, so various predators were lying in wait looking for their own dinners. Aze had caught two hares that suddenly jumped out in front of them on the road, so he didn’t need to attack the riverside animals.

The two chose a place with a relatively wide view and no animals by the river to drink water. Aze skinned and sliced the two rabbits cleanly. As soon as the entrails were thrown into the river, a shoal of fish quickly gathered around and devoured them. Even the bloody fur was gone in an instant. Chen Qi, who was about to go up to the river to wash his face and clean himself, immediately stopped in his tracks and went back to stand beside Aze, filled with lingering fear. Even the fish are so cruel, this world is really unfriendly.

Aze smiled and handed Chen Qi two green leaves that looked like bananas that he’d picked from the fig tree next to him when he’d caught the rabbits. Aze knew that males loved to be clean. His younger brother used to send him to fetch water, wash, and pick up fig leaves every day, though those tasks were now taken over by Ake. But thanks to his brother, Aze had known that males liked to use figs to clean themselves up, so he’d prepared some when he happened upon them on the road.

“Don’t be afraid. These fish dare not attack beastmen.” Of course, Aze didn’t specify that it was only the female beastmen that the fish did not dare to attack and that male beastmen were not within the scope of their vigilance.

Chen Qi smiled wryly. He was not ready to admit that he was frightened by the fish. He took the strange leaf that he’d never seen before from Aze and asked, “What is this?”

“The leaves and fruits from the fig tree. The leaves can be used to clean the teeth, and the fruits can be used to clean the body,” Aze explained.

The fig tree of this world was different from Chen Qi’s previous perception of it. The reason why it was called a fig* tree was because, regardless of the season, one could not tell whether it was currently growing fruits or just leaves. It did not have a flowering state. After the leaves fell off, it would grow fruits that looked exactly like those leaves, and when the fruits fell off, it would regrow leaves that looked exactly like the fruits.

Chen Qi picked up the two leaves that looked a bit like bananas. He examined them, from the left and from the right, but he couldn’t see how they could be fruits.

Aze pointed to one of them and said, “Look here, the darker color in the middle of the stem is the fruit.” With that, he reached out two of his fingers and gave it a slight twist. A trace of greenish liquid was squeezed out from inside. “Try and rub it.”

Chen Qi rubbed his hands with the liquid and plainly saw white foam emerge. It seemed that the fig fruit’s use would be equivalent to soap.

“If we walk along the Chishui River for another day, we will reach the tribe,” Aze told Chen Qi while twisting off a rabbit’s head and throwing the head into the river.

“Does your tribe rely on this river?”

En, the location of our tribe is not very good. While it is backed by the river and mountains, it is not as well-defended as the Lion-Wolf Tribe. However, there are many fig trees around the outskirts of our tribe. Their smell can cover up the scent of beastmen so that hyena-drakes cannot find us.”

Chen Qi spread the foam onto his face and, while keeping close to Aze’s side, quickly rinsed his face with the river water. However, the fish did not swim over. “Is this river called Chishui because of the color of the soil?”

En, the mud from this river can be scoured and burned. We go to the Lion-Wolf Tribe every year and exchange pottery in return for things like flint and salt stones.”

“You can make pottery?” Chen Qi asked in surprise. Frankly, he thought this world would be more primitive.

Aze nodded. He’d finished processing the two rabbits, so Aze filled the laiche fruit with water. After seeing that Chen Qi had finished washing himself up, Aze said to Chen Qi, “Let’s go.”

The sun was about to disappear beyond the horizon, and the Dora Plains would soon be dark. The beastmen’s night vision was not as good as that of other night predators on the plains. It was not wise to stay by the river for too long.

The resting place that Aze chose was an acacia tree not far from the river bank. Perhaps because of its proximity to the river, this acacia tree was much taller than the ones he’d seen before. Once again, Aze tore off some semi-dry branches from the acacia tree. Chen Qi didn’t want to just stand around idly. He gathered some dry grass, cleared out an open area and took out the lighter to start a fire.

Aze sprinkled the sap from two ghost needle flowers along the roots of the acacia tree. They had not encountered the ghost needle tree again today, but fortunately, he’d purposely taken two extras yesterday. When he turned back, he saw that Chen Qi had already started a fire. He went over and added the broken branches to the fire. “Chen Qi, your flint is so powerful. You were able to make a fire in an instant.”

Chen Qi looked at the lighter in his hand. It was made of silver-white metal and had a wolf logo on it. The shape was very unique. Chen Qi did not smoke. The lighter belonged to the original owner of the coat. Chen Qi handed the lighter to Aze. “Do you like it? For you.”

Aze was stunned. He hurriedly waved his hand and replied. “I can’t accept such a precious flint. Chen Qi, keep it for yourself.” His two flints cost more than a dozen animal skins and hides, and Chen Qi’s flint could produce fire in one go, so it must’ve been even more expensive than his own.

Chen Qi grinned and did not know how to explain to Aze that it was not flint, but anyway, it was something that could make a fire. “This is just a gift for you. Not only did you save me, but you also helped me so much along the way. I will also be troubling you to take care of me some more once we arrive at the tribe. Just this little flint is not really that valuable.”

“Gift?”

“Here, I’ll show you how to use it.” Chen Qi shoved the lighter into Aze’s hand, holding Aze’s strong, slender fingers and adjusting the other’s fingers’ position. “Hold it like this, open the lid here, look, the fire comes out, isn’t it very simple? Starting a fire won’t be a problem anymore.” He noticed how Aze had started a fire with flint last night. It had taken more than a dozen strikes before sparks came out.

Chen Qi loosened his hand. Aze felt that the places touched by Chen Qi were hotter than the fire. “Thank you.” Aze whispered, feeling warm in his heart. How could the male in front of him be so good? He put it away carefully, treating the lighter in his hand like a fragile treasure.

Chen Qi set up a rack like Aze did last night and put the water-filled laiche fruit on it. The husk of the laiche fruit was already scorched to black. Burning it over the fire once more would probably be its limit. Chen Qi missed the kettle that he’d bought but only used a handful of times back home.

While Aze roasted the rabbits, Chen Qi walked around the fire. This time he did not find any edible plants, mainly because Chen Qi himself did not know much about plants.

The taste of rabbit was obviously better than the taste of warthog. Chen Qi ate a whole one by himself this time.

The sky was completely dark, and the moon tonight was much dimmer than yesterday. After eating, Aze added some firewood to the fire and carried Chen Qi up into the acacia tree. Perhaps it was because Aze slept on the branch next to his tonight, but Chen Qi felt a little calmer and had a good sleep.

When they woke up the next morning, the sun had just climbed out of the horizon. The group of wildebeest that had been crossing the river yesterday were nowhere to be found and had been replaced by a herd of antelope. A strong adult tiger with white fur around its fierce eyes* leaped out of the grass and pounced on the first male antelope crossing the Chishui River. The antelope herd fell into a panic. Those that had not yet stepped ashore fled in different directions. It was not until the tiger dragged its prey away that peace was restored.

Chen Qi’s thoughts were a mess. Why did tigers appear on the grasslands?!

“You’re awake?” Aze finished tying up the unwanted entrails and head of his latest prey in the freshly skinned hides and planned to throw them into the Chishui River later. He wiped his bloodstained hands with acacia leaves and climbed onto the branch Chen Qi was on.

En, you went hunting so early?” Chen Qi looked at the processed prey beneath them, but he couldn’t tell what the original species had been now that it was skinned. It looked a bit like a deer though.

“When I got up, I saw an elk nearby and caught it. Let’s go to the river and wash up,” Aze said as he bent down and offered his back to Chen Qi. Chen Qi climbed onto Aze’s back with great familiarity.

The two men still cleaned their prey at the same place as yesterday, and the laiche fruit could no longer be roasted on the fire, so Chen Qi did not struggle with whether the water was boiled or not this time.

After washing up, the two returned to the acacia tree with their meal. The fire had been rekindled by Aze, so all they had to do was put the meat over it and roast it.

After they finished eating, there was still half an elk left for lunch later. Aze buried the fire with dirt, tied his luggage in front of him, carried Chen Qi on his back, and ran along the riverbank of the Chishui River towards the tribe.

As the sun rose, more and more animals appeared by the riverbank. Most of them crossed the river from the opposite riverside. Chen Qi guessed that their migration route should be in the direction of the Chishui River. As the number of animals crossing the river increased, predators from the Dora Plains also began to gradually gather around, so Aze made a detour away from the riverbank.

After the rest of the venison was hastily eaten at noon, the two continued their journey until the sun went down. Aze travelled without taking any breaks. Chen Qi was about to ask Aze if he would be stopping to find a place to rest at night when Aze suddenly slowed down, turned to Chen Qi and said, “We’re almost there.”

Looking ahead, Chen Qi could vaguely see a rocky mountain.

“We won’t rest in the wild tonight. We will go straight home. Can you hang on a little longer?”

The corners of Chen Qi’s mouth twitched. He’d been lying on Aze’s back the whole time, if someone were to be asked, it should be him asking Aze whether he could carry him a little longer. “En, I’m fine.”

Aze handed Chen Qi a green fruit. “If you’re hungry, eat this. This fruit is not very tasty. If you can’t get used to the taste, just bear with it. I’ll prepare food when we get back.” There were not many plants that could produce fruit in the Dora Plains. If he wasn’t worried that Chen Qi would be hungry, Aze wouldn’t have offered Chen Qi this unpalatable fruit.

Chen Qi took the fruit and looked at it. He did not recognize what kind of fruit it was. Aze picked up his speed once again. Chen Qi stuffed the fruit into his coat pocket and did not eat it.
