Chapter 147
Although the four gates of Qi Ze City had been closed early, in order to let the beastmen witness the first performance in Qi Ze City’s history, Azhang rarely gave the females guarding the city walls a holiday, allowing them to enjoy themselves at the bonfire party.
Aze didn’t like such crowded entertainment, and Chen Qi wasn’t interested in such primitive fun either. After the performance ended, Aze voluntarily took over the night’s defense duty, and Chen Qi kept him company. The two of them spent the night together in the watchtower on the city wall.
Near dawn, Chen Qi had asked Aze to wake him early so he could watch the sunrise, but who would have thought that along with the sunrise came the appearance of the ironshell-drakes.
The leaders of several tribes went up the wall with Azhang, while Ahxu and Ali were responsible for gathering the elderly females and males into the school near the back gate of the wall. If the ironshell-drakes broke through the city gate, they could quickly retreat to the wall or leave Qi Ze City through the back gate.
The ironshell-drakes were still quite a distance from Qi Ze City. It wasn’t until all the beastmen had climbed up the wall that Chen Qi finally saw their figures clearly.
This time, there was neither too many nor too few ironshell-drakes—about fifty or sixty of them. Among them were several hyena-drakes which were about half their size.
At first, the beastmen weren’t sure if this group of ironshell-drakes was actually coming toward Qi Ze City. After all, during the winter, they had already experienced the migration of locust dragons and antelope-dragons. Even though these were carnivorous ironshell-drakes now, it didn’t necessarily mean they were dangerous—perhaps they were merely passing through.
Just as the beastmen were hoping this group was only passing by, the sun rose higher, and the ironshell-drakes’ figures became clearer. When they finally stood across the dry moat facing the beastmen on the city wall, everyone’s fleeting hope vanished.
This group of ironshell-drakes indeed came for them.
“What should we do now?” Axu asked Azhang, who stood beside him with a frown.
Azhang gestured for the beastmen of Qi Ze City to bring out all the wooden bows stored in the watchtowers. Half of the arrowheads had already been replaced with iron ones, but most were still made of bone and wood, with insufficient power—at best, they could only disrupt the enemy’s movements.

Azhang ordered, “Let’s observe first. If the moat can’t stop them, then attack with bows and arrows.”
The beastmen scattered in response, each holding a bow and arrow, fully alert and ready for battle.
Aze leaned toward Chen Qi. “Let me take you to Uncle Ali first.”
Chen Qi shook his head. “Those ironshell-drakes aren’t taller than the city wall. Even if they cross the moat, they can’t hurt me.”
Seeing Aze frown in disapproval, Chen Qi patted his palm to reassure him. “Besides, with you here, nothing will happen to me. I’ll just stand on the wall and watch—I promise I won’t go near the ironshell-drake.”
Aze thought for a moment and finally nodded. Having Chen Qi by his side did make him feel more at ease.
This group of ironshell-drakes seemed to be led by several hyena-drakes. When they reached the moat, a few of the hyena-drakes stepped forward. One of them paced along the edge for a while, then lowered its head to sniff at the ground near the moat before raising its gaze toward the dense crowd of beastmen on the wall.
The hyena-drake happened to be looking directly in Chen Qi’s direction. Even though he knew it wasn’t truly staring at him, Chen Qi was startled by the greed in its eyes. It felt as though he had already become prey under its claws, about to be torn apart by sharp teeth at any moment.
The hyena-drake’s gaze made Chen Qi deeply uncomfortable, and he averted his eyes slightly to examine the other ironshell-drakes instead.
The ironshell-drakes were positioned farther behind the hyena-drakes, scattered loosely across a wide area, making their numbers appear even greater than they truly were.
Chen Qi’s gaze swept over the sunlight glinting off the armored plates on the creatures. If this batch of ironshell-drakes could be taken down, their armor might be enough to forge all the farming and kitchen tools needed throughout Qi Ze City.
However, the ironshell-drakes’ armor was too thick, and the females’ attacks could hardly harm them. Even though the number of females in Qi Ze City was three or four times that of the dragons, Azhang dared not rashly lead an attack outside the city. After all, no one knew if more dragons were hiding farther away.
The beastmen stood high on the city wall, facing the dragons that stood silently across the dry moat. Neither side made the first move.
But the standoff didn’t last long. The leading hyena-drake withdrew its gaze from the beastmen and slowly flicked its tail a few times. The ironshell-drakes behind it suddenly began to move.

Azhang raised his hand slightly, and the beastmen drew their wooden bows to full tension. Once the dragons charged, they would shoot at their weakest point—the eyes.
To the beastmen’s surprise, the ironshell-drakes and hyena-drakes had no intention of charging into Qi Ze City. Instead, they turned and retreated toward the forest.
Only after the dragons completely vanished across the plains did Ayan ask in disbelief, “Did they just leave?” Everyone knew that when hyena-drakes encountered beastmen, they never left without attacking or biting at least a few times.
Azhang shook his head. These dragons had appeared and left for no apparent reason. It didn’t look like an attack—more like they were scouting ahead.
He shared his guess with the others. Aze’s expression darkened as he remembered the hyena-drakes that had entered through the snow bear’s cave during winter and those that had ambushed beastmen in the snow.
Ayan, unaware that hyena-drakes had once ambushed them here, found it hard to believe that a group of beasts could plan such reconnaissance before a hunt.
The Salt-Water Tribe was the farthest from the forest, and although they had never encountered such a situation before, having lived in Qi Ze City for quite some time, Axu pondered Azhang’s theory seriously.
“No matter if they came to scout or not, it would be better not to leave Qi Ze City for the next few days. We can’t be sure they aren’t lying in ambush outside,” Azhang suggested when he saw Ayan’s doubtful look.
Ayan didn’t immediately agree. He wasn’t the leader of the Lion-Wolf Tribe—he needed to discuss it with Bo De before deciding.
The males and elderly females were orderly arranged in the classrooms at the school. There were desks and chairs for lessons, and Ali had brewed a pot of tea, pouring each person a cup to calm their nerves.
Several elderly females from Qi Ze City stood guard outside the classroom. The older females from the Flame-Hill Tribe exchanged surprised glances when they saw the Qi Ze elders, who were even older than themselves, calmly and methodically continuing their tasks without panic, despite dragons appearing outside the city.
Finally, one of the elderly females walked up to Ali and asked if there was anything he could help with.
Ali was momentarily stunned, then smiled and led him to Acheng. Though Acheng was supposed to stand guard outside, he knew his senses had dulled with age and weren’t as sharp as the younger females like Ashu’s. So, he and Azhu sat to the side weaving bamboo sieves.
Beside them lay many split bamboo strips. Acheng had first started weaving to make better paper, but over time he improved his craft. With Chen Qi’s many suggestions, he could now make baskets and other bamboo goods as well. The paper-making work had long been handed over to Azhu and several Salt-Water Tribe females, while Acheng had spent his time crafting bamboo products—the bamboo mats the beastmen slept on last night were made by him.
After hearing Ali’s explanation, Acheng warmly invited the elderly females to sit and handed them bamboo strips, carefully demonstrating how to weave the sieves.
Bo De quietly watched the busy Ali. The sight of that limping figure made him frown in distaste. In truth, he had long forgotten Ali’s existence over the decades. If not for seeing him surrounded by people when they arrived in Qi Ze City, and hearing that vaguely familiar name called out along with spotting the limp, Bo De might never have remembered that this was the same female he had once been betrothed to decades ago.
Decades ago, Ali had been one of the fiercest females in the Rock-Mountain Tribe. During his coming-of-age ceremony, he had led other newly adult females to hunt an adult male stegosaurus. His triumphant return carrying the prey had drawn the admiration of many young males. Bo De was older and naturally had experienced much more than the other males who had just reached adulthood and had not yet lost their childishness. This undoubtedly stood out and attracted the attention of single females.

Even so, it had taken Bo De great effort to win Ali’s heart. Ali had even gifted him a dragon-horn knife as a token. They would have soon become mates, if not for tragedy—Ali had been crippled by a hyena-drake attack before that could happen, losing use of one leg and, over time, his ability to transform into a beast.
How could a female without beast transformation or the ability to run, hunt, and provide for a family? Upon learning this, Bo De had promptly taken another strong female from the tribe as his mate instead.
“Ali,” Bo De called out.
Since entering the classroom, Ali had felt Bo De’s gaze glued to him the entire time. It made him uneasy, but since Bo De was the leader of the Lion-Wolf Tribe, he couldn’t openly confront him.
Hearing Bo De call his name, Ali’s lips twitched, but he ignored him. After handing the Flame-Hill elders over to Acheng, he left the school.
If Azhang saw him talking with Bo De, he might very well lash out and beat Bo De up. Ali smiled faintly at the thought. He had long forgotten about Bo De decades ago, though he hadn’t expected Azhang to still remember so clearly. Whatever sudden interest Bo De now had in him, Ali wanted nothing to do with it.
Not long after Ali left, Ayan arrived. Bo De was surprised to see him return so quickly—were the dragons really that difficult to deal with?
As Bo De speculated wildly, Ayan briefly recounted what had happened and mentioned Azhang’s suggestion that they stay for a few more days.
Bo De lowered his head in thought for a while, then finally shook it. “No, we’ll set out for the tribe tomorrow at the latest.”
