To Raise a Soul 48.1

Thump! Thump! Thump!

Why did he say sorry?

The “inheritance” presented by Yin Hexiang’s lawyers truly wasn’t a small sum. There was a far larger sum than Yu Zhen had seen the last time.

Yu Zhen looked suspiciously at Yin Yan.

[I turned some assets into money.]

Ah, so Yin Yan also did some “money laundering”.

With his sudden, newfound understanding, Yu Zhen signed each of the documents laid out by the lawyers. Then he received a small portable safe along with its password and fingerprint authorization.

“That’s everything for that part. When we investigated Mr. Yu’s bank account, we found that, apart from the large overseas assets, there were some domestic assets. According to the records, there is a bankbook with 1 million yuan. It’s registered at XX bank’s branch in Dawu City in H Province. In accordance with his wishes, when Mr. Yu passed away, money was donated from the account to a relief organization for impoverished children. Each month, the money was contributed under your name. At present, there is 790 thousand yuan in that bank account. Would you like to review the transactions?”

Yu Zhen was stumped.

An account with one million yuan? How did Grandpa have so much money?

He looked at Yin Yan again.

Yin Yan shook his head.

Yu Zhen became even more confused.

If Yin Yan didn’t do this, that means that Grandpa actually had an account with a million yuan?

Why didn’t Grandpa tell me about this?

No, that’s not right. Grandpa was never one to discuss our finances.

He suddenly didn’t know if he wanted to laugh or cry. He shook his head at the lawyer and said, “No need. Since it’s what Grandpa intended, continue doing what he planned. Thank you for your efforts.”

“Mr. Yu is too polite. This is what we should do,” the lawyer replied with a smile. Seeing that the tasks were done, he politely said goodbye and then left.

[Your grandpa was helping you to accumulate blessings by using your name.]

Yu Zhen looked at Yin Yan and then smiled at him.

I know that Grandpa has always treated me well without saying a word about it. Grandpa probably didn’t tell me about the 1 million yuan so that I wouldn’t feel a burden in my heart.

Watching the inheritance handover from the sidelines, a complicated feeling rose in Yin Hexiang’s heart.

Unexpectedly, his son’s dog shit luck* brought back a partner who not only had a good temperament but also had a rich grandfather. It was fine that he had money, but it was surprising that despite the wealth, he would choose to live difficult days with his grandson in the countryside.

*It means good luck. For details see [1]

I don’t understand. I don’t quite understand how this in-law’s brain circuits worked.

Are Taoists really this lacking in desires and wishes?

Unable to understand, he put a lid on the thought. Then he glanced at Yin Yan who continued standing by instead of comforting Yu Zhen. He couldn’t help but say, “Xiao Yan, work hard.”

Thinking about it, my son doesn’t even have half of what Yu Zhen has… Maybe I should give more shares to him? What if my son feels inferior? Not to mention that Yu Zhen was practically swindled by Yin Yan into joining this house. My son hasn’t achieved anything yet, will Yu Zhen look down on him?

“You also have to deal with the project properly to gain some more experience. Dad has a big project to give you later on.” Yin Hexiang was extremely worried that his “daughter-in-law” would fling his son aside now that he had become rich.

Yin Yan pretended to not understand the implications and simply replied with a low hum. Taking hold of Yu Zhen’s hand, he said a simple goodbye and left with Yu Zhen in tow.

As Yin Hexiang followed their departure with his eyes, his gaze fell on their interlocked hands. His heart, which had dropped to his stomach, picked itself back up. It’s alright. My son still has some strong points. His skin is thick enough and he knows to quickly stake his claim.

Remembering the previous times when his son paraded Yu Zhen about the office, Yin Hexiang broke into laughter and picked up his documents.

After entering the elevator, Yu Zhen immediately leaned close to Yin Yan. He lifted the small portable safe and said, “The lawyer gave us one card. I’ll give it to you when we get back.”

“No need. Keep it with you,” Yin Yan replied. He then pressed the button for the sixth floor, where the security unit was located. Looking back at Yu Zhen, he asked, “Why did you suddenly come to the company?”

To kiss you.

Yu Zhen blushed. He noticed that they were still holding hands, but pretended not to notice it. He evaded Yin Yan’s gaze and replied, “I came to spend your birthday with you. What do you want to eat tonight? I’ll make it for you.”

It was the end of spring and the start of summer. The weather was very hot, so Yu Zhen wore a casual button-up shirt with the top button undone. When viewed from above, the fair skin against the soft azure fabric drew out a gentle desire for touching.

Yin Yan released Yu Zhen’s hand just as the elevator coincidentally arrived at their destination. Yin Yan alighted the elevator first and said, “Eight Treasure Cubed Rabbit. You don’t need to catch the hare today.”

Yu Zhen looked at his now empty hands and then he silently stared at Yin Yan’s back for a few seconds. When the elevator doors began to automatically close, he finally rushed out. He then took the initiative to hold the hand by Yin Yan’s side and, feigning nonchalance, he stated, “Not that dish. That’s my favorite. Today’s your birthday, so let’s eat what you like.”

It was difficult to avoid bumping their shoulders together. With the high temperature and few layers of clothing, the sensation of their body heat passing to each other became very obvious.

Yin Yan’s movements turned slightly stiff. Without looking back, he seized the opportunity to take up Yu Zhen’s hand again, and he replied, “Then, let’s eat fish. The fish in the space have just been fattened up.”

So it turns out he likes fish.

The corners of Yu Zhen’s lips quirked up slightly as he looked at their interlocked hands and their wrists which were adorned with red threads and pagoda towers. Recalling the hints of stiffness in Yin Yan’s movements, he looked up at the side of Yin Yan’s face. An idea appeared and grew in his heart.

Maybe… I wasn’t wrong about what I had felt.

Neither of them realized, but as they left the elevator, they had performed a scene of someone racing to catch up to hold the other’s hand. Onlooking security guards who were leaving after their shifts were suddenly overcome by an intense need to pinch their own arms.

It’s too corny. The little boss and his wife haven’t done anything too intimate, nor said anything sickeningly sweet, nor exchanged glances, but this atmosphere… I can’t stand it, I really can’t stand it. It’s unbearable for single dogs!

When Yu Zhen saw the young man sitting on a chair with both a policeman standing beside him and security guards keeping watch in the lounge, he was brought back from his moment of romantic fantasizing. It was only then that he realized Yin Yan hadn’t brought him to the fifteenth floor but to the security room.

The policeman present was an acquaintance who had often come into contact with Jin Jiang. Seeing Yin Yan, he gave a greeting full of familiarity and said, “The truth came out after some questioning. This youngster snuck into your office to leave this behind. But he happened to meet your spouse by accident. After he was caught, he had a guilty conscience. But he felt your spouse would be easy to bully, so he made some noise.”

The policeman handed over a card with simple and elegant decorations. Yin Yan accepted it and opened it up. Without any hesitation, he then passed it over to Yu Zhen.

Hunched over in his seat, the young man’s eyes widened at the scene. Looking at the card in Yu Zhen’s hand, he sank further into himself and lowered his head wordlessly.

Yu Zhen was at a loss as to why Yin Yan handed him the card, but he looked down and opened it.

[Yan, please let me see you one last time. Please complete my wish. XX Japanese restaurant. I will keep waiting for you, Ya. ]

Yu Zhen: “…”

It sounded like a request to see a loved one from a person who had some terminal illness and was at death’s door.

With good timing, a guard stepped forward and said to Yin Yan, “Someone from HR just called. This person’s name is Feng Wei. He started interning for the company after the new year. He usually works on the 17th and 18th floors.”

Yin Yan nodded, then he looked at Feng Wei and asked, “Did Han Ya tell you to come here?”

Feng Wei lowered his head and did not speak.

“Did you know that, as a new graduate, having a reputation for sneaking into your boss’ office will have a very big impact on your career?”

Feng Wei stiffened up. He looked at Yin Yan, face pale.

“If this case is pursued, you won’t have the chance to think about having a job in this line of work in B City.”

Yin Yan’s words were merciless. Feng Wei’s face turned even paler and beads of sweat appeared across his forehead. However, his lips remained tightly sealed.

“You treat Han Ya as your elder cousin, but even though she knew what the consequences of this would be, she still sent you here to do her bidding. Feng Wei, did Han Ya tell you what to say to smear Yu Zhen’s name?”

Hesitation flashed in his eyes, but he remained quiet.

“Smearing Yu Zhen’s name is an offense against me and an offense to the Yin family.” Yin Yan rarely had this much to say, but he continued, “Do you understand what would happen to a young person who offends the Yin family when they have no backing? How do you think companies that work with the Yin family’s companies would treat you?”

What else would happen? Companies who wanted curry favor with the Yin family would avoid him if they could. Some might even trample on him.

Feng Wei was finally scared. He was only being loyal to his cousin. He didn’t expect that delivering a card could have such serious consequences.

Yin Yan stepped back and restrained his lofty manner. “You didn’t know about these things. You’ve only just graduated and are a young man who came to the big city because of his cousin’s words. But Han Ya would know these things. Feng Wei, you have caused offense, but you were also deceived by someone. I can dismiss this case, but you need to go to the 15th floor and apologize for your defamatory words against Yu Zhen. Make it clear what the reasons were for you to say those words.”

Feng Wei’s internal struggle was obvious. He eventually said, “Uh-Ummm, is your past with my cousin…”

“No,” Yin Yan replied. He found Wu Xuan’s phone number and copied it for Feng Wei. “This person will tell you what you want to know. He’s the one who’s your older cousin’s ex.”

Two minutes later, Wu Xuan was about to receive a customer when an unfamiliar number called his phone. The caller immediately asked him about Han Ya, asking if he had two-timed and discarded his pitiful girlfriend.

Wu Xuan’s anger flared up at the question. He shouted, “Which dumb asshole are you?! You’ve been tricked by Han Ya! Scram! Don’t bother me! That kind of woman who likes to pretend to be in love and then goes around keeping spare tires – who cares if I abandon them?! If you want to act out an idol drama, go act in it by yourself! Don’t bother me! What shitty luck!”

The phone was mercilessly hung up and a quiet blanketed the security room.

Feng Wei clutched onto his phone, appearing dazed by the attack. He stared blankly and wordlessly.

“Will you apologize or will we continue with the case?” Yin Yan asked.

Feng Wei’s shoulders slumped in defeat and he placed his phone in his pocket. “I…will go apologize.”

Yu Zhen didn’t watch the apology. He only stopped Feng Wei as he entered the elevator with the security guards. “About me being dumb before I was six, did Han Ya also tell you this?”

Feng Wei glanced at him. Looking awkward and guilty, he nodded and replied, “Yeah. Everything about you was told to me by my cousin. Um… Sorry.”

With a smile, Yu Zhen replied, “It’s alright. Follow better examples in the future.”

Everyone can make mistakes. If they know their mistake, they can change their ways. I can give him another chance.

Footnotes:

  1. 狗屎运. Literal word-for-word translation: dog shit luck.

It means an unexpected success, and is also slang for ‘lucky bastard’.

Supposedly it comes from a past practice in China. Farmers didn’t have a lot of fertilisers so they processed feaces to use as fertilisers. But people don’t poop enough so some would wake up early to collect dog poo. On top of that, the dog poo could be sold. So those who collected a lot of dog poo could get more money. Wonderful story, huh? I hope none of you are eating right now🙈

No no, not this part. I don’t like how they forgave him!!! He’s not a kid! He’s an adult and can think quite well. It’s not their problem that he was ‘deceived’!! He must be an asshole too because he said all those hurting words without batting an eyelid! I really didn’t expect Yin Yan to be all forgiving and welcoming to such an asshole! I’m disappointed

From my very very limited knowledge from reading C-novels, doesn’t “Yu” also mean fish?

So by wanting to eat a fattened up fish-
