Epiphanies of Rebirth 42.1

Chapter 42.1

Qi Kai was beaten up badly enough that he wasn’t in the condition to further participate in the group’s activities. Therefore, after the lunch Xiao Chi said Qi Kai “won’t be joining them for,” the man never showed himself up again.

This caused Dai Gaofeng to be very angry with him. Privately, he complained to the bosses he was friends with, “That Qi Kai! He’s always been a piece of work but these days, he seems to be getting worse and worse!”

His grievances, however, were not Lin Jingzhe and Xiao Chi’s concern. The trip to Changqing was only two days in total; after deducting the five or six hours needed for the drive back to Yan City, the time they had left was not that much. The dinner was barely finished when Dai Gaofeng announced it was time to leave.

Attracting real estate investors was critical to a city’s urban development. The current Changqing Province was not well-developed, and a group of real estate businessmen from Yan City were invaluable resources. As such, Mayor Cao was very unwilling to see them go. To exhibit his hospitality and sincerity, he gathered a large number of people to give the group a warm send-off.

Among them was also Wang Quan, the businessman they met at the restaurant, and his followers.

Lin Jingzhe was completely calm now, having vented all his anger and frustration on Qi Kai. Meeting Jiang Qiaqia yesterday had shaken him mostly because he was caught unawares. Today, from the beginning to the end, he never even glanced at her.

Certain wishes were impossible to ever be fulfilled, but having some regrets in life was not necessarily a bad thing. He’d already decided not to have any contact with Jiang Qiaqia—rather, he would be doing his best to avoid her. Moreover, Jiang Qiaqia’s life was obviously not so good at the moment and he was determined not to let her hurt him ever again. That being the case, was there any need to pay attention to her?

Besides, Jiang Qiaqia was about the furthest thing from his mind right now. What happened this morning…

Thinking about it now, it was ridiculous.

But it felt so… The way it made him feel was—

As his pants threatened to become too tight in a moment, he hurriedly started thinking about something else so he’d not embarrass himself in public.

Regardless of his mental age, his body was only twenty at the moment and brimming with youthful vigor. Still, Lin Jingzhe was quite surprised as he’d always considered himself to be a rather cold person. During the time when he was living the high life in Yan City in his last life, he might’ve been acting unbridled, but he’d cared more about how he could retaliate against his indifferent family than women. Then, his father’s death and what followed forced him to grow up overnight, and he was too busy trying to earn enough money to survive to have time or energy to spare for romance. And later… As he was getting older and used to being alone, he became even less interested in rolling under the sheets. This was the first time ever it made his blood boil with excitement like that.

It was addictive, overwhelming, and exhilarating, making him feel completely alive. Like a magic box that couldn’t be closed after being opened, after experiencing this feeling, it was impossible to forget it.

Lin Jingzhe turned his head and faced Xiao Chi, who stood next to Dai Gaofeng listening to him speak. Xiao Chi’s gaze was sharper than usual, making people afraid to look at him. Only Lin Jingzhe knew that what the other man was feeling was not anger at all—rather, he seemed to hate that he couldn’t grab Lin Jingzhe and peel off his clothes right that moment.

Talking only with their eyes like that, as if they were having a secret love affair, felt oddly thrilling. Smirking, Lin Jingzhe glanced at a certain place below Xiao Chi’s belt, then, not hiding it at all, let his gaze wander leisurely around Xiao Chi’s body.

The obvious meaning of that look made Xiao Chi’s blood instantly heat up. Dai Gaofeng was talking to him, but he had no idea what the man was saying.

He could only stare at Lin Jingzhe, his eyes like burning flames, until his gaze became almost savage.

Noticing that his attention was elsewhere, Dai Gaofeng glanced back to see what he was looking at and caught sight of Lin Jingzhe’s provocative stare. Instantly anxious, he said, “Xiao Chi, as your uncle, let me tell you something: it really is better to get rid of enmity than keep it alive. I’m not sure about the reason you had a falling-out—is it because of this mistake with the rooms?”

Lin Jingzhe licked his lips and smiled, tilting his head to glance at Xiao Chi through half-lidded eyes, and Xiao Chi’s brain abruptly stopped working. “Yeah,” he uttered absent-mindedly, his mouth feeling as dry as a bone.

Oh, for crying out loud! Helpless, Dai Gaofeng continued to persuade: “You usually act so mature and dignified you appear to be about my age, so why are you suddenly having a fit of temper like a child? Though Mr. Lin is so young, you shouldn’t take him lightly—rather, we should be more on guard because he’s so young…”

Xiao Chi stopped paying attention to his uncle. In his eyes, Lin Jingzhe’s every action just now was an obvious come-on. The prayer beads in his hand moved quickly as he recited sutras in his mind, but it was of no help. He used to advise Hu Shaofeng to exercise more self-restraint and indulge himself less in pleasure, but before he even knew, those principles seemed to have been thrown out of the window. Right now, all he wanted was to find a quiet place where no one would disturb them, press Lin Jingzhe, who’d been ignoring him yet kept provoking him with every move, distracting him from proper business, down, and strip him naked. Then, he would make this troublemaker too preoccupied to think about doing mischief, so that he would have no strength to do anything but cling on Xiao Chi’s neck for kisses like this morning, flushed and gasping for breath.

How the heck could anyone be so adorable so adorable so adorable so adorable so adorable so adorable—

The way the other man pretended to be unaffected despite clearly tethering on the edge of losing his reason made Lin Jinghze want to laugh, until a voice calling his name brought him out of the rare mischievous mood.

His face smoothing into a bland mask with no traces of previous amusement visible, he turned in the direction of the voice. “Yes, Mr. Qi?” he asked with a polite smile.

Qi Qing, with Jiang Qiaqia in tow, stopped in front of him, smiling somewhat ingratiatingly. “I’m really sorry to see you go back already, Mr. Lin. I wish you could stay a bit longer.”

“Yes,” Jiang Qiaqia chimed in. “We’d like to treat you to a meal.”

“It’s not necessary,” Lin Jingzhe refused with a smile, slightly averting his gaze as he glimpsed Jiang Qiaqia’s sincere expression. He was really worried that he would get indigestion sitting at the same table with those two. However, they were the kind of people who never visited the temple without a cause; having no patience to deal with them any longer than he had to, he took the initiative: “Is there something I can help you with, Mr. Qi, Ms. Jiang?”

The smile on Qi Qing’s face immediately became more zealous. “No, no, Mr. Lin, please don’t take things that way! We just felt an instant connection with you. For those who have no yuanfen, it takes ten years of good deeds to cross a river in the same ferry, but we’ve been brought together by fate and even shared a cup of wine—I wonder, how many years of good deeds did it take for our meeting to become predestined?”

Predestined, huh? If you knew what kind of the “fateful connection” we have, I’m afraid you would be scared to death.

“Ever since I first saw you, Mr. Lin, I don’t know why but I feel close to you,” Jiang Qiaqia added emotionally. “Now that I think about it, it’s probably because I have a younger brother. Though of course, Mr. Lin is smart, wise, and farsighted, many times better than my brother. I don’t know what kind of family is capable of producing such an outstanding talent like you.”

She meant to flatter, but unexpectedly, after hearing this, Lin Jingzhe stopped smiling and looked away from her, his face again calm and unreadable.

Jiang Qiaqia was at a loss. Qi Qing realized that he was looking a little too eager, and hurriedly toned it down a little. He cleared his throat and said, pretending not to be embarrassed, “Well, such an important person as Mr. Lin must be very busy, so there’s no helping it. Next time my wife and I have an opportunity to visit Yan City, we will definitely invite you for a meal to make up for the one we missed today!”

Ah, the mystery is solved. You intend to extend your business to Yan City, so you want to get some connections that would help you gain entry into the capital’s real estate market?

Lin Jingzhe finally figured out what was going on. Qi Qing and Jiang Qiaqia’s appetites were really voracious—before even fully exploring the market in Changqing Province, they were already thinking of moving on to Yan City.

However, it was true that no matter how lucrative the property business in Changqing Province was, it could never compare with Yan City. Moreover, the construction of the Changqing highway had just been announced; it would take several years until it opened and when it did, the urban planning might not be able to quickly get on the right track. The majority of the alliance members who came to Changqing to investigate regarded the investment here just as a shallow dip into the waters outside Yan City. Although they appeared very interested, in fact, most of them were taking a wait-and-see approach.

Doing business here, it would be a long time before one saw the return on their investment.

That Qi Qing and Jiang Qiaqia didn’t want to wait was not surprising.

Lin Jingzhe felt something was odd, though. In his last life, these two were doing very well in Qunnan, so what kind of difficulties did they have in this life that they needed to try to develop in other provinces? He didn’t interfere in any way except for not letting Jiang Qiaqia take away the antiques. How did Qi Qing end up so miserable?

This question, however, only briefly lingered in Lin Jingzhe’s mind. He didn’t want to get involved with them, so he only nodded and replied perfunctorily, “I’ll keep your invitation in mind.”

Jiang Qiaqia comparing him to her younger brother was really funny, so funny that he grew weary of forcing himself to be civil and playing along with them.

He turned around and got in the coach, leaving the two staring powerlessly after him. The couple exchanged glances, at a loss. They stayed where they were for a while, but considering Lin Jingzhe’s tepid attitude, they had no other choice but to leave, feeling disgruntled.

Translator’s Notes:

  1. “They were the kind of people who never visited the temple without a cause”無事不登三寶殿 (idiom) – one would not go to someone’s place except on business, for help, etc.
  2. “It takes ten years of good deeds to cross a river in the same ferry” – the whole proverb is 十年修得同船渡,百年修得共枕眠 – lit. “ten years of cultivation bring two people to cross a river in the same ferry, and a hundred years of cultivation bring two people to rest their heads on the same pillow.” I took the translation from Wikipedia. Basically, it means they have no fate together. (Here, 修 means meditation/cultivating immortality, but I used “good deeds” to make the sentence more understandable for neophytes.)

The last part… is so ironic. How could! The mother doesn’t recognize her own son! I’m baffled! My heart hurt reading this part. It’s not surprising that old Jingzhe getting spiral in his nightmare.

I’m so happy to see the exchange between XC and Jingzhe! That lessen the darkness of this chapter

I’m ok with him not directly attacking Jiang Qiaqia. But I hope he doesn’t let them encroach on his space & disturb his peace.
