Morgue
Anywhere inside the hospital.
Deep in thought, Shi Jin stepped out of the doctor’s office and observed his surroundings. The office’s location was really good—close to the stairs and next to the elevator, but in the corner of the building. The passers-by wouldn’t notice any movement there, unless they deliberately looked that way.
And because Lishui Hospital only had one entrance, people were accustomed to using the staircase and elevator nearest to it, the others effectively forgotten.
However, the location of the office had one obvious shortcoming—it was diagonally opposite of the hospital storeroom, separated by the length of the floor. The elevator and staircase only provided stealthy movement up and down between floors, not across the floor, so anyone moving a large amount of boxes from here to the storeroom would stand out like a sore thumb. As such, it was unlikely that the storeroom was the destination of the goods.
But if not the storeroom, then where?
Was there another, hidden storeroom in Lishui Hospital? And, one only connected to the pharmacy, independent of the hospital, the real reason why Long Shi chose to hide there?
Shi Jin felt that he had discovered the truth. He went to check out the elevator while recalling the overall layout of the floors of Lishui Hospital but couldn’t think of a place big and convenient enough to be the hidden storeroom. After looking around, however, his attention turned to a place most people would hardly think of—the morgue.
Not every hospital had a morgue, but Lishui did. It was on the underground floor and not accessible by the main staircase, only by the staircase and the elevator next to the doctor’s office. According to the earlier investigation report, it was very small, with only two rooms, one for corpses and one for sundries and utilities. Usually, only an old nurse’s aide watched over it, and there was nothing there to attract anyone’s attention.
But now, Shi Jin felt that the morgue was worth a visit.
He pressed the elevator call button, telling Gua Two his conjecture.
After a moment of consideration, Gua Two gave him a free hand.
The lanky man had been keeping an eye on Shi Jin. Seeing him suddenly call from the elevator, he promptly asked, “Team Leader Shi?”
It was the first time Shi Jin had been called this, and it took him a few seconds to realize the man was addressing him. Glancing back at him and the other Annihilation members, he thought for a moment and replied, “I’m going to check another place. 9, 10, 11, and 12, you follow me. The rest can move freely, just pay attention to the movements around here.”
The four people entered the elevator with Shi Jin, leaving the other two behind.
“Where are we going?” the lanky man asked as the door closed.
Shi Jin pressed the button for the underground floor. “To the morgue. What are your names?”
The morgue?
The man froze for a second, then replied hurriedly, “Just call us by our numbers, it’s easier to remember. I’m 9.”
The other three nodded affirmatively and introduced themselves with numbers.
Shi Jin remembered their faces one by one, then looked at the elevator panel. He found that as the elevator went down, static appeared in his earpiece. He frowned and tried to call Gua Two several times, but didn’t get a response.
“The signal underground is bad,” Number 9 said, also pressing his earpiece. “I lost connection.”
Shi Jin lowered his hand. “Follow me, and try stay close.”
It was best they didn’t get separated.
While they spoke, the elevator arrived at the underground floor and stopped. The door opened, revealing a dimly lit corridor.
Shi Jin took the lead. After confirming the situation outside, he pulled out his gun and walked down the corridor towards the two doors at the other end.
The corridor was long, and some prayers and religious scenes unique to L country’s beliefs were painted on its walls, making it look quite eerie. The lanky man swallowed nervously. He looked at Shi Jin at the front of the group, apparently completely unaffected by the surroundings, and a glimmer of admiration flickered in his heart.
The psychological strength of this young man, who looked a little younger than him, seemed outstanding.
The two rooms at the end were dark, with no lights on. Their doors were locked.
Shi Jin shot both locks, then not caring if anyone was inside, threw tear gas grenades in.
Once he did, the utility room was still quiet, but there was a commotion in the corpse storage room.
“There are people inside. Be careful,” Shi Jin said in a low voice, heading towards the noisy room.
The gloom and silence made the lanky man jittery. His mind full of ghosts and moving corpses, he hesitated, a bit scared to go in. During the few seconds he’d delayed, gunshots started to ring.
—There were indeed people in the morgue, and not just one or two.
Shi Jin put on his pollution mask again. Without asking for anyone to cover him, he shot through the door a few times. Then, using some incomprehensible judgment, he threw open the door, rolled inside, and stopped behind an empty morgue bed. Kicking it over, he crouched behind it and made several more shots at people hiding in the corners.
Screams and groans reverberated in the room, then there was silence.
Click.
Shi Jin got up and turned on the light in the morgue. After the tear gas completely dissipated, he signaled for his companions still outside to come in, then went to check the state of the opponents.
There were six people in total; four were slightly injured, and two had passed out from their wounds.
Shi Jin was silent, but his grip on the gun tightened. Although he had known the casualties were inevitable, he still felt uncomfortable.
Hurting and killing people was not a great experience.
Adjusting his mood, he asked two people to tie them up and dress their wounds. Leaving them to it, he started to search the morgue.
When the lanky man heard his order, his expression grew odd.
Taking care of the fallen enemies’ wounds was probably the strangest order he’d ever heard. Team Leader Shi was full of contradictions—his actions were as skilled and efficient as if he was a battle-seasoned veteran, yet at the same time, he showed a weird compassion that only a rookie would have. What a strange person.
Shi Jin didn’t notice the mood fluctuation of his temporary subordinates. He carefully observed the small morgue.
Lishui Hospital was an old hospital, which showed in the interior décor and fixtures. The morgue, with dim lights and pale, gloomy walls, was a mixture of old and new. The beds and freezers embedded in one wall were new, but some of the furniture and equipment had been clearly used for years.
There was nothing else in the room—no goods, and seemingly no place to hide them. However, since the Hydra members stayed here, they must’ve been protecting something.
Shi Jin studied the floor, then the walls. Finally, his gaze fell at the mortuary freezers.
Number 9 had been paying attention to Shi Jin’s movements. When he saw the teenager look at the cold chambers, a bad feeling appeared in his heart.
The next second, his hunch came true—Shi Jin suddenly walked towards the freezers, reached for one of the drawers, and pulled it out without hesitation.
An old man’s body was revealed. He would’ve died not long ago, because aside from his paleness, he looked as if he was just sleeping.
Number 9 couldn’t help taking a cold breath and turning his head away. He was ashamed of it, but he had a big weakness—despite successfully passing Gua Seven’s training, he couldn’t get rid of his fear of ghosts and corpses.
Shi Jin saw the body and froze, but he quickly got a grip. After apologizing to the old man, he closed the drawer and pulled the next, not affected in the least.
The lanky man thought he was going to suffocate. In his mind played an endless loop of a corpse suddenly sitting up!
But in reality, there was obviously no such thing as a moving corpse. Shi Jin smoothly opened one freezer after another, his expression calm and his movements steady. Finally, when he reached the last chamber, he was met with resistance—it was locked.
Shi Jin stopped. After pondering it, he chose to pull out his gun and shoot the lock, whether there was a body inside or not.
The lanky man: “…”
Once the mission was over, he would go to the temple to burn incense.
After several shots, the lock broke. When Shi Jin pulled the drawer again, it moved, and not only it—the upper and lower drawers moved too. They all opened together, like a door, revealing an entrance which could easily accommodate a person.
There was a light coming from inside—there was a room behind it.
Number 9’s eyes widened with shock.
Shi Jin’s expression changed. He tackled the lanky man to the floor with a flying dive and rolled away with him, warning loudly, “Watch out! Get down!”
In this line of work, when somebody shouted “get down,” you got down. The other three instantly dropped to the ground.
Bang bang bang.
The sound of gunfire rang from the inside. Fortunately, Shi Jin warned them in time and no one got injured.
After confirming everyone was fine, Shi Jin let go of Number 9, sneaked to the side of the door and threw in a tear gas grenade, as usual. Signaling his companions to lay down the cover fire and suppress the enemy, he waited for the right moment, then nimbly crawled inside the hidden room.
That’s right, crawled. Shi Jin’s movements were agile and graceful, but they still couldn’t be called anything else.
The four people: “……”
This seemed different from the training they received.
But all in all, Shi Jin smoothly entered the room.
It was large, filled with strange equipment and shelves with bottles and cans. It looked like a secret experimental research base.
Shi Jin was thrilled, knowing that he probably uncovered why Long Shi had hidden in Lishui Hospital. Taking a deep breath, he forced himself to calm down—now was not the time to be giddy. He used his hearing to distinguish the enemies’ positions, and approached the nearest one under the cover of the shelves. He hit the back of the man’s neck with his pistol’s grip, silently rendering him unconscious.
Not many people hid inside the secret room. With the help of Xiao Si’s hearing buff, Shi Jin easily took them down, then found the signal jammer and destroyed it, restoring connection with Gua Two.
{Why did I lose contact with you? Did something happen on your side?} Gua Two asked at once.
Shi Jin stood in the middle of this strange room, looking at the tied up people in white coats and the messy laboratory equipment on the tables. Unable to conceal his joy, he said, “There was a signal jammer in the morgue. Stop searching for the storeroom and send the people here—I’ve found Hydra’s secret laboratory. They seem to be developing new drugs.”
For a moment, Gua Two froze, shocked at the news, then his eyes lit up. He couldn’t help slamming his fist on the steering wheel. “I knew you could do it, kid! Wait, I’ll send someone to you right away. Gua Three secured Hydra’s headquarters and is on his way here. I’ll ask him to notify L country’s authorities.”
Gua Three’s forces arrived half an hour later. L country’s officials took away the captured Hydra members, as well as all the goods they hadn’t managed to move away. Gua Three and Gua Two came to the morgue, joining Shi Jin in staring foolishly at the drugs and instruments filling the secret room.
“These… What are they for?” Gua Two asked, dazed.
Shi Jin wiped his face with his hand, embarrassed as he admitted, “I don’t know the language of L country…”
Gua Three, the most level-headed of them, glanced around what looked like a rudimentary chemistry lab. “We need the professionals’ help,” he announced.
Gua Two immediately pulled out his phone and called Gua Seven—Uncle Long didn’t come with them to L country, so they could only ask Gua Seven to send doctors from the local branch to help.
After another half hour, several doctors arrived in a hurry.
Shi Jin and the others let them work in peace and left the hidden room. They stood in the morgue, looking at each other.
“It’s not too early. Let’s go eat?” Gua Two asked heartily.
Gua Three’s eyes swept over the gloomy morgue, then over Shi Jin, who was visibly concerned about the hidden lab. “Yes, let’s eat, it’s been a busy day. Since the situation developed this way, we won’t be able to go back today—we need to stay here overnight and wait for the results of the doctors’ search. Who is going to report to Jun-shao?”
“I will,” Shi Jin broke from his concern and answered quickly, taking out his phone. “I’m going to talk to Jun-shao, I’ll be right back,” he said, rushing outside.
Gua two watched him leave, rubbing his chin. “So that’s how the real-life version of, ‘A single day apart seems like three years,’ looks like, huh?
Gua Three gave him a look. “If we’re talking about idioms, then remember, ‘A loose tongue may cause a lot of trouble.’ Be careful not to get punished.”
Gua Two immediately stopped rubbing his chin and squinted at him. “Jun-shao is not here, so you aren’t scaring me.” After that, he ignored him and went back to the secret lab.
Shi Jin returned to the van parked outside the hospital. After making sure no one would disturb him, he found his tablet and instead of calling with his phone, he made a video call.
The call was answered immediately, and the image of Lian Jun sitting in the study appeared on the screen.
{Shi Jin?}
“It’s me.” Shi Jin couldn’t help but put the tablet close to his face, carefully scrutinizing Lian Jun’s appearance. “Your lips are so pale—you worked through lunch again, didn’t you?” he said with certainty, frowning.
As soon as Lian Jun saw him, his face softened. He closed the file in his hand and replied, {I didn’t. It’s just that if you aren’t here, I have no appetite.}
You dare say this?
“Then you must have a good dinner tonight. You need to eat even if you have no appetite,” Shi Jin admonished him immediately. “I won’t be back until tomorrow.”
Lian Jun’s eyebrows creased. {Why? The mission isn’t going well?}
“The opposite—we’ve got a new lead, but it will take some time to examine and analyze our findings.” Shi Jin described the course of today’s mission in detail, highlighting the suspiciousness of the secret laboratory. He speculated, “Long Shi had been hiding in Lishui Hospital for several years. He must’ve participated in the research of new Hydra drugs and, with his interests, he would’ve mostly studied natural psychoactive toxins. As long as we find the samples of his research, we’ll be able to sift out more clues about the poison. Then, you’ll be able to get better sooner.”
Lian Jun listened attentively, watching his messy hair and dusty clothes. His gaze softened little by little. It looked like there was a lot he wanted to say, but he only said, {Shi Jin… you’ve worked so hard.}
“At this point, you should say ‘I miss you’ instead of ‘you’ve worked hard.’ It wasn’t hard at all,” Shi Jin corrected him, face solemn.
Lian Jun’s complex emotions were easily swept away by his lover’s teasing. Mouth tilting up, he repeated obediently, {I miss you.}
“Me too,” Shi Jin replied immediately, smiling and sending a kiss at the tablet. “I should go back. I’ll call you later?”
The corners of Lian Jun’s mouth fell. He forced them to rise again and nodded. {Okay.}
Shi Jin looked at his face for the last time and hung up. Heaving a sigh, he leaned back against the car seat. “Xiao Si, I want Lian Jun, I want to hug him.”
Xiao Si let out a comforting noise and tried to cheer him up: <Tonight, go to bed early. You’ll be able to go back to Darling when you wake up tomorrow.>
“But it’s still a long time from today to tomorrow,” Shi Jin said despondently, slumped in the seat. Abruptly, he sat up again. “No, this won’t do, I can’t just mope around—time will pass faster if I find myself something to do. I’ll help the doctors search the laboratory!”
Xiao Si wanted to remind him that he didn’t understand the language of L country, and even if he did, he had no medical knowledge at all. However, thinking of its host’s current mood, it swallowed these words and said instead, <I’ll help you, JinJin!>
And so, Gua Two and Gua Three, who stayed in the morgue, saw Shi Jin run back inside looking much more energetic. He acknowledged them with a few words, then rushed into the laboratory and began to carefully rummage through the shelves with medicines and chemical reagents.
Gua Two raised an eyebrow. “I’m reaaaaally curious. What, exactly, did Jun-shao say to him?”
“I see you’re going for a major penalty this time.” Gua Three gave him a look, then reached out and patted him on the shoulder. “Come on, we need to talk to the L country’s officials. Let’s leave this place to Shi Jin—we’ll call him when it’s time to eat.”
Gua Two shrugged his hand off. He glanced at Shi Jin, absorbed in the search, nodded, and followed the other man out.
Alas, it turned out love couldn’t make people instantly learn another language or suddenly become a doctor.
“I need your help, Xiao Si.” Sighing, Shi Jin put down the medicine bottle in his hand.
Xiao Si said helplessly, <JinJin, while it’s possible for me to provide translation service, I don’t understand medical knowledge either.> Unfortunately, it wasn’t a powerful all-around system.
“No, I don’t mean either of those—I need you to scan this laboratory for records made in either Chinese or general Y language. Long Shi learned both in his childhood. Even if he learned other languages later, it’s likely he would’ve unconsciously used the ones he was most familiar with when recording information.”
Xiao Si immediately perked up.
Shi Jin found a small stool nearby and sat down, waiting for the results of the scan.
Fifteen minutes later, the system exclaimed excitedly, <I’ve found it! I’ve found some Chinese characters in the upper right corner of that bookcase!>
Shi Jin jumped to his feet and rushed towards the indicated place.
The bookcase Xiao Si mentioned was an old cabinet. The doors were broken, and the records inside were a mess, mixed with all kinds of odds and ends. It seemed to serve as a place for keeping random junk.
According to Xiao Si’s instructions, Shi Jin dragged out a notebook and a cardboard folder from a scattered pile of waste in the cabinet. Blowing dust off them, he began to check their contents.
The notebook was small, about the size of his palm, and filled with Y-language words. Shi Jin glanced through it but found it was all specialized vocabulary which he couldn’t understand. Regretfully, he set it aside and turned his attention to the folder.
There wasn’t much data inside, only about a dozen pages, and the first few pages were full of some random professional terms. It wasn’t until page six that Shi Jin found something useful.
It was an abstract sketch of something resembling a jellyfish. There were some scribbled Y-language words next to it, almost unintelligible, but no trace of Chinese characters.
Having a vague hunch about what he was looking at, Shi Jin hurriedly checked the rest of the pages.
They were filled with careless sketches of snakes of unknown species, strange-looking polyps, plants with gorgeous flowers, and more and more Y-language words. Finally, at the very bottom of the last page, Shi Jin found a blurry character which looked to have been written unconsciously and then erased.
Jun.
It was clearly “Jun.” It might’ve been fuzzy and indistinct, but it was obviously the Chinese character meaning “Jun.”
As Shi Jin realized the significance of this data, his heart began to pound and his hands tightened around the folder. His eyes brightened as if they were filled with stars—this was the poison formula, it must be! If it wasn’t, he was going to find Long Shi and chop off the son of a bitch’s hand!
Translator’s Notes:
‘A single day apart seems like three years’ – a popular idiom, 一 日三 秋 (yí rì sān qiū), lit. “one day, three autumns.” It means that time seems to slow down when you’re missing someone. (Source)
‘A loose tongue may cause a lot of trouble’ – self-explaining, I think. The whole idiom: 病從口入,禍從口出 (bìng cóng kǒu rù, huò cóng kǒu chū), lit. “illness comes in via the mouth (because of food) and trouble goes out via the mouth (because of words),” so carefulness is required in one’s diet and speech. Sorry, guys, you’ll be subjected to the anti-theft chapters for some time. The real content is in images, though the mtl is readable too.
I decided to forget people stealing translations exist – and anyway, Olga, also Russian, commented under the last chapter that while they may post the translated chapters if the novel isn’t licensed, making profit from it (as they do now) is illegal. As I said, I’m going to forget that site exists, but I’m a little curious how much longer it will be around.

Edit: Ok, I changed it back – the images did exactly nothing. Oh well. Anyway, if people want to pay for things they should’ve had for free, why should I care?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
