Three Graves 3

Planting Flowers

The weather was clear the next day.

Professor Fu went back to school early in the morning for an elective class Sunday afternoon.

Before leaving, he pulled Lin Chen to the side to nag until Xing Cong Lian couldn’t stand it anymore and forced him out of the car into the train station.

β€œSee you the day after tomorrow, Senior!” Fu Hao waved his hand through the window.

When Xing Cong Lian returned to the car, Lin Chen was basking in the sun while lost in thought.

β€œThe relationship you have with your fellow brother is good.” Xing Cong Lian started the car’s engine with a smile.

β€œWe’ve known each other for many years, after all.”

β€œAre you going to Yong Chuan the day after tomorrow?”

β€œYes, it’ll be the old man’s birthday.”

Xing Cong Lian remembered that the β€œold man” Lin Chen mentioned was his teacher who liked to buy Star Cups for his students, but was always cheated by the kiosk’s owner.

β€œThe old man who taught you and Fu Hao must be an interesting person,” Xing Cong Lian said in a rueful tone.

β€œMaster is kind to everyone,” was Lin Chen’s reply.

Instead of returning to Yan Jia Alley or the police station, Xing Cong Lian parked his car on a street full of stalls selling flowers.

The window was half open, and the gentle scent of flowers drifted into the car. Seeing both sides of the street lined with stalls and people walking around with smiles on their faces, Lin Chen was at a loss as to what they were doing here.

Β Xing Cong Lian climbed out as if there was nothing strange and opened the door for Lin Chen. With his other hand placed on the roof, he said with a smile, β€œMister, please get out of the car.”

Although this might make him seem inexperienced in the ways of the world, Lin Chen had never entered a flower shop before, let alone going to a street full of flower stalls and choosing some to plant or get as a season-appropriate decor and such. However, Xing Cong Lian seemed to be quite the veteran at this. As Lin Chen followed and watched Xing Cong Lian talk to the shop owner, he dropped some terms Lin Chen could hardly understand. Not long after, Xing Cong Lian carried several packets of newly purchased seeds he said were for planting daisies and geraniums.

β€œWhy did you suddenly think of buying flowers?”

β€œJust wanted to save myself from Professor Fu’s nagging about the barrenness of our house,” Xing Cong Lian said as he raised up the bouquet of lilies and baby’s breath in his hand. Without any prompting, Lin Chen took the bag on his left hand, freeing it so that he could pay for his purchase.

Hearing him say so, Lin Chen found himself laughing. Decorating their empty house with flowers was somewhat strange, like β€œputting the cart before the horse” kind of strange. β€œYou have quite the hobby of making your life interesting,” he said, half in jest.

β€œOf course.” The mixed-race man’s face was covered by the flowers, leaving only a handsome profile and striking eyes to the view. β€œMy mother taught me that boys who don’t know flowers won’t be able to trick a wife home.”

His eyes were striking green. Behind him was a Chinese parasol tree, sprouting anew with its branches stretched out, almost covering the azure sky.

Lin Chen’s heartstrings quivered. Although he knew it was just a joke, and was unlikely to be aimed at him, it was all too easy for people to be moved by sweet nothings. β€œThen it’s lucky that you’ve studied hard,” he said.

Joyful occasions always involved purchasing flowers, and it didn’t take long for Xing Cong Lian and Lin Chen’s hands to be full of them. They had also reached the end of the flower street.

Xing Cong Lian looked ahead. He seemed to have thought of something, then turned to his side and said to Lin Chen, β€œWe can go back now, I think,” before spinning on his heel.

β€œWait.” Lin Chen also remembered something and called out, β€œI remember Wang Chao said that you had a tombstone made for me in the small cemetery at the end of Hua Street. Can I take a look?”

Today’s weather was good. The running river in the distance was quiet and tranquil, while the Tai Qian Bridge was visible from afar.

Lin Chen stood in front of his tombstone, feeling surreal. Clearly he was alive, and yet he was looking at his own tombstone.

The name on it was indeed his. But other than that, it was empty — no date of birth, date of death or photo of him. It made him feel off; it seemed not serious enough, and yet too serious at the same time. After all, he and Xing Cong Lian had only known each other for a few days up to that point in time. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that their meeting was by chance. Wasn’t buying a piece of land and setting up a tombstone for someone you met by chance too serious, or what?

Xing Cong Lian stood aside, appearing unable to recall what he felt when he had the tombstone made. Maybe it was sadness, maybe it was helplessness. However, those feelings seemed to have vanished the moment Lin Chen reappeared. Right now, the only emotion he felt was embarrassment. After all, the owner of this tombstone was standing right beside him and hadn’t spoken for several minutes already.

After thinking about it, he decided to speak first, β€œUh, I forgot to tell the manager to remove it.”

His voice broke Lin Chen’s trance. Lin Chen turned halfway around before pulling one of the flowers in the bouquet he was holding and said, β€œIt’s okay, let it be.”

The lily placed in front of the grave was still damp with dew. Xing Cong Lian smiled. β€œYou don’t think it’s unlucky?”

β€œLet’s just leave it here. If I do go first in the future, remember to bring wine and come see me.”

This sentence was full of ill omen, but when Lin Chen said it, it sounded as natural as him saying he would wear more clothes tomorrow. To him, life and death had always been natural occurrences.

Xing Cong Lian also replied in a natural manner. β€œI thought you don’t drink?”

β€œIf you’re the one offering it, I might consider.”

The conversation in front of the tombstone was short and the topic was also about a small thing — drinking.

The sky was clear in the afternoon.

Lin Chen sat on the balcony overlooking the river to read. The tea in his cup was hot, and there was a small plate of biscuits on the table.

Xing Cong Lian was arranging the bare flower racks on the balcony with his sleeves rolled up.

It seemed that the training for the police force in their country was quite good. Captain Xing was well-built, with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. There wasn’t a trace of fat on him, and his strong muscles were visible under his tight shirt.

The sun was a little too dazzling. Lin Chen closed his book, focusing his attention on Xing Cong Lian planting flowers.

It had to be said that for people with mixed Italian descent, if they couldn’t cook, they must know how to plant flowers. Also, the flowers they plant must be beautiful too.

With ease, Xing Cong Lian mixed four kinds of soils in the right proportions, replanted the flowers and watered them. His movements were fluid and skillful, as though he was a gardener in profession. The sunlight on him created a light halo around him. In his clear white shirt, he looked very handsome with a warm and calm temperament about him.

Out of nowhere, Lin Chen thought of the question that he answered wrong: Have you ever liked anyone?

Xing Cong Lian set the pot of daisies onto the flower rack and dusted his hands off. Then, he heard a faint hum coming from his side.

When he turned around, he saw Lin Chen sitting in the rocking chair, a tea cup in one hand and a book in the other, humming a tune without realizing.

The tune was light and sweet, surprising him. It turns out Lin Chen can hum.

β€œWhat song is that?” Xing Cong Lian asked, amused.

Lin Chen was stunned for a while, but he smiled and answered, β€œI don’t remember. I think something about planting flowers?”

β€œIt’s pretty nice.” Xing Cong Lian took out a cigarette before seeming to remember something. He didn’t light it, and instead turned to Lin Chen. β€œIs it no problem for you to go to Yong Chuan alone the day after tomorrow?”

β€œWhat problem would there be?”

Xing Cong Lian looked at Lin Chen up and down, from his plush slippers to his sleepy eyes, and said, β€œWith that constitution of yours, I always felt it was impossible for you to travel alone without encountering any accidents.” He leaned against the balustrade, the wind blowing against him and a smile plastered on his face as he spoke.

Lin Chen sighed, feeling helpless. For a moment, he didn’t know how to respond to that.

β€œYou studied at Yong Chuan University?” While leaning against the railings, Xing Cong Lian faced towards the sky. Sunlight splashed onto him like water.

β€œYeah.”

β€œYong Chuan University, huh? You really are smart.”

As an important cultural town in China, there were many universities in that city. Yong Chuan University was the oldest private university in the country and when it was established, its highest goal was to be a world-class famous university. After several capital injections and several generations of effort, it was now in the rankings of China’s top three universities. Since Lin Chen graduated from Yong Chuan University, it wasn’t an overstatement to call him smart.

β€œI’m just good at studying,” Lin Chen replied in earnest.

Xing Cong Lian had long been used to this straightforward style of his, so he didn’t feel that Lin Chen was bragging. Instead, he felt that the man was so candid he seemed adorable.

He then sat down in the rattan chair, picked up the teapot and poured himself half a cup. Taking a sip, he continued the conversation, β€œIf I remember correctly, Yong Chuan City is the Chen family’s territory?”

His sitting posture was pristine, and the way he poured the tea and drank it was not superficial, but natural and serene. Meaning, not only was he familiar with the art of floral arrangement, but also proficient at the tea ceremony. Lin Chen now realized that the reason why Xing Cong Lian brought up the topic of his trip to Yong Chuan city was because of the Chen family.

Of the four North and South Familes, the Chens and Huangs were situated in the north. The Chen family just happened to live in Yong Chuan City.

In the previous Feng Pei Lin case, the obsessive head of the Chen family made a point to send his butler for the sole purpose of making Lin Chen lose his job yet again. Lin Chen didn’t know how Xing Cong Lian got information on this family, or how he seemed to know them like the back of his hand.

β€œIt’s just my teacher’s birthday celebration and a reunion party with classmates.”

Hearing the word β€œreunion”, Xing Cong Lian frowned and thought for a bit before asking, β€œThe Chen family is one of the shareholders in Yong Chuan University, right?”

He was implying that even if it was for a reunion, Lin Chen shouldn’t just go back to his university on a whim.

β€œI’m going for a meal and staying for a night. It shouldn’t be a big deal, right?”

β€œNot necessarily. In any case, call me if anything happens.”

β€œHopefully, I won’t have to call.”
