Chapter 139
During the period when the dormitory was being completely built, Chen Qi remodeled the cowhide drum once again. He melted down the leftover scraps of iron armor and made them into nails, and he also took the opportunity to make quite a few bone nails.
The newly made cowhide drum no longer used ropes to tighten both ends; after switching to nails, the whole drum looked much more proper and well-made. Chen Qi also found some bright red dye fruits and painted the drum’s body several times. A row of red drums placed together looked especially striking.
The drumsticks were no longer just two straight wooden rods; instead, the heads were shaped into rounded forms and wrapped in red cloth.
Chen Qi went over the large stack of carefully designed choreography once more. Among them were two drawings showing the costume designs. To help the local beastmen feel a stronger sense of connection, all the clothing materials were made entirely from animal hides, with only a few additions such as necklaces, bracelets, and headpieces. This part only needed to be handed over to Ali, who had already made plenty of items based on Chen Qi’s designs and could fully bring Chen Qi’s ideas to life without requiring much of his supervision.
“Chen Qi, the morning class is over,” Aze called out from the doorway.
Chen Qi responded and packed things up. Now that the dormitory construction was complete, there were no large-scale activities that required all the beastmen to participate—aside from the hunts held every other day. After discussing it with Azhang, he planned to begin rehearsals for the war dance starting today.
The war dance rehearsals were set to take place on the school playground. The field was quite large, and Chen Qi had marked it out in the shape of a soccer field. Unfortunately, the beastmen had no time to play soccer at the moment, and Chen Qi himself wasn’t particularly interested in sports—otherwise, he probably would have tried to tinker together a cuju* ball to play with.
*Cuju (蹴鞠) was an ancient Chinese ball game similar to soccer.

This event was mainly intended to help the single females attract the attention of the males. Although the older females of Qi Ze City didn’t need to attract anyone anymore, they were still quite interested in this so-called dance. To make time for the rehearsals, all four city gates were closed early, and a few of the older females even took the initiative to swap duties with some of the younger guards on the city wall, allowing the younger ones to go and take part in the practice.
So by the time Chen Qi arrived at the playground, almost all of the beastmen in Qi Ze City were waiting for him.
An amateur choreographer leading a bunch of novices was bound to result in a chaotic situation. Although everyone’s roles had already been assigned early on, the whole morning was only enough for the drummers to tap their drums a few times and for the dancers to arrange a few formations and movements.
Until the rehearsal ended, there hadn’t been any sign of coordination among them. Chen Qi felt a bit worried, unsure whether he could teach the beastmen how to perform the war dance before the first snowfall.
Azhang, however, was very optimistic. Although he hadn’t seen the results of the rehearsal yet, just by looking at the designs Chen Qi had drawn, they were more than enough to attract the attention of the males.
Days passed slowly in this uneventful yet extraordinarily busy routine. A wooden platform about half a person tall was built on the playground, the red-fruit trees in the tribe had grown to half a person’s height, and large patches of potatoes had begun to bloom. Because of the lack of insects on the plains, Chen Qi led people in manually pollinating the entire area of flowering plants. Fortunately, the flowering periods of the potatoes and sweet potatoes were staggered, so it didn’t turn into a hectic scramble.
During this period, Chen Qi also discovered white wax.
The discovery of the white wax was actually a coincidence. Although Azhang had been warned by the great wolf-god and no longer entered the forest, all the firewood in the tribe was still sourced from trees cut down in the forest. The white wax was found on one of the trees from the pile that Aze had brought back—a tree Chen Qi had never seen before.
With the white wax, making candles became much easier, since the wax was naturally white. Chen Qi also added different colored dye-fruits to the melted wax, so the candles came out in a variety of colors. Once they had candles, he even made some lanterns out of paper. The lanterns were dyed bright red, and each house hung a few under the eaves, giving a very festive appearance.
“Is that Qi Ze City up ahead?”
“Are their city walls all made of earth? How could they possibly build them so high?”
“Do you hear some strange sounds?”
“It seems to be coming from Qi Ze City.”
“……”
A group of young males was carried by their relatives, and upon seeing the towering city walls, they couldn’t hide the excitement in their eyes. They seldom had the chance to leave the tribe, and although they already sensed the chief’s intentions, they still felt a bit nervous and uneasy. Yet, when they heard the females who had been to Qi Ze City talk about this strange tribe, they couldn’t help but be drawn to it.

Upon seeing the familiar tall reddish-brown city walls, Axu’s gaze softened considerably. Along the way, because he had to accompany the young males, he hadn’t dared to relax even without encountering any attacks from creatures. Now, seeing their destination right in front of him, he couldn’t help but secretly exhale in relief. A faint, almost imperceptible curve appeared at the corner of his mouth as he called to the others, and the group set off en masse toward Qi Ze City.
Because of the training, the wooden plank bridge over the moat had long since been removed. When the group from the Salt-Water Tribe arrived, they couldn’t help exchanging astonished glances at the massive moat before them. Axu shouted toward the watchtower above the city gate, and after a long moment, an old female with a face full of wrinkles poked his head out.
The old female still remembered Axu. He seemed to whisper something to someone behind him before loudly telling Axu and his group to wait a moment.
Even with a tall city wall in between, Axu’s keen hearing could still faintly pick up the clamor coming from Qi Ze City. However, shortly after the old female told them to wait, the noise subsided, leaving no time for him to ponder it. A wooden plank bridge was slowly lowered, followed by the heavy city gate being gradually opened.
The old female stood by the gate and saw that the group from the Salt-Water Tribe had smiles all over their faces. “There’s still some time before the first snowfall. We didn’t expect you to arrive so early,” he said.
Axu went forward to greet him and replied, “After all, we were bringing the young males. It would have been troublesome if the first snow had fallen on the way.” The Salt-Water Tribe and Qi Ze City were quite far apart, and Axu had planned from the start to arrive early. That way, they could spend the first snowfall there and return afterward, avoiding encountering winter on the journey. Otherwise, given the young males’ constitution, he worried that those unaccustomed to spending winter outside the tribe might fall ill.
The old female nodded knowingly and led the group to a large wooden table by the gate. He took a notebook and a quill from a drawer. Axu knew this was for registration, so he reported his own name smoothly, then introduced everyone from his tribe to the old female one by one.
The old female greeted them gently while slowly registering their names. Although he wrote slowly, fortunately, he recognized the characters for everyone’s names, so he didn’t need to be like Ale and constantly run over to the side and recite the Thousand Character Classic from memory to know what to write.
The males all got down from the females’ backs and looked around curiously. When they saw the old female sitting at the table writing, they even leaned over to ask questions, and he patiently answered each of them one by one.
This time, fifty people came from the Salt-Water Tribe, twenty of whom were males, and the rest were females. The females were all very young; aside from Axu, the others appeared to have only recently reached adulthood. The males’ ages were more varied. One of them had a few strands of white in his sideburns and crow’s feet at the corners of his eyes, making him look slightly older than Azhang. He wasn’t as curious as the others; although there was surprise in his eyes, he quietly stood at the edge of the crowd. Only during registration did he step forward a few paces and give a slight nod to the old female, as a way of greeting.
“Brother.” Ashu, who had just finished rehearsing, still had sweat beads on his forehead. His face was a bit flushed from the intense exercise, but his eyes became unusually bright when he saw familiar members of his tribe.

Because he knew that the people from the Salt-Water Tribe had arrived early, Chen Qi reminded everyone not to reveal the details of the performance to them in advance. After all, knowing beforehand would lessen much of the element of surprise.
Seeing his younger brother, who had grown taller over the past period and whose features had matured considerably, Axu couldn’t help but curve his mouth slightly into a smile. However, he only reached out to ruffle Ashu’s slightly coarse short hair before moving past him to greet Azhang, who was coming up from behind.
The other beastmen from the Salt-Water Tribe who were already staying in Qi Ze City hurried forward to help carry the luggage when they saw their fellow tribespeople. Under Axu’s guidance, they first arranged for the group to settle into the dormitories. After all, they had been traveling for almost a month, and both the males and females couldn’t hide the exhaustion on their faces.
Most of the luggage brought by the Salt-Water Tribe this time consisted of saltpeter, followed by various dried aquatic products, and some cotton and kapok seeds that Chen Qi had specifically asked Axu to pay attention to.
Chen Qi didn’t rush to plant these seeds. After all, there was only a little over half a month left before the first snowfall, and he worried that any seedlings that had just sprouted wouldn’t survive the winter, which would be a complete waste.
Azhang led Axu toward the school. During this period, another building had been constructed next to the school to serve as a reception hall; normally, it was used as a dining hall when the rest of the tribe ate together. Being close to the cooking classroom made it quite convenient.
Axu looked over the tribe, which had changed a great deal since his last visit. “I can hardly recognize it anymore.”
Ashu came over, a proud expression on his face. “Brother, I’ll take you on a tour in a little while. There are a lot of things now that you haven’t seen before.”
Seeing that little expression on his face, Axu ground his molars and lowered his voice. “Do you still remember that you’re from the Salt-Water Tribe?”
Ashu grinned cheekily, then stuck out his tongue playfully.
Watching the interaction between the two brothers, Azhang laughed heartily and patted Axu on the shoulder. Turning to Ashu, who was following behind, he said, “Once everyone is settled, you can take your tribe on a proper tour. The people from the Flame-Hill Tribe haven’t arrived yet, so there’s no rush for the gathering right now.”
Ashu hurriedly nodded in agreement.
Because of the arrival of the Salt-Water Tribe, the rehearsals were put on hold for the time being. Almost a month had been enough for the beastmen to memorize the entire performance process, so now they just had to wait for the gathering to begin before going on stage.
Seeing the single females in the tribe enthusiastically greeting the beastmen from the Salt-Water Tribe, Chen Qi shook his head with a smile. He glanced at the sky, went home to light a candle, and planned to light each of the oil lamps in the tribe one by one.
Aze carried out a pottery dish filled with boiled fish oil. Walking ahead of Chen Qi, he filled the oil lamps, after which Chen Qi followed to light them. Before long, the dim lamps began to glow throughout the tribe, appearing exceptionally bright after the sun had completely set.
