Chapter 33: Chili Seeds
Through Lele, everyone learned that the toad, Croakie, was hunting the black mosquitoes. The mosquitoes were invisible to the naked eye, but Croakie could sense them. A toad as large as Croakie naturally had a big appetite. However, there were very few mosquitoes around Jing Lin’s house, so from yesterday until now, it had only been half full.
“Not full? Then let it come to my house!” Zhao Zhiwen said.
Although he still got goosebumps whenever he looked at Croakie’s strange appearance, his family had suffered terribly from mosquito bites the night before. If Croakie could really solve the problem, then even if it looked a little ugly, Zhao Zhiwen would welcome it.
After asking Croakie what it thought, Lele and Zhao Zhiwen took the toad away.
When leaving, Le Le originally wanted to carry Croakie, but the toad was far too heavy. After failing to lift it once, he gave up. Instead, he walked ahead with Zhao Zhiwen while Croakie hopped along beside them.
Duckie tagged along too. It boldly jumped onto Croakie’s back, planted both feet firmly on it, and no matter how Croakie hopped, he remained steady. Flapping his wings and honking excitedly, he looked extremely pleased with himself.
Zhao Chenghuai and Zhou Yu were chopping firewood. The weeds and roots they had pulled out earlier had been bundled into small piles and placed in the yard, waiting to dry before being used as fuel.
When Zhou Yu saw the enormous toad following behind her son, she screamed in fright. Zhao Chenghuai also immediately tightened his grip on his axe and stood up.
Zhao Zhiwen quickly reassured them. “Don’t worry, it’s not dangerous.”
Then he guided Croakie into his parents’ room.
Zhou Yu was horrified. “What is that thing?! Why are you putting it in my room?!”
“A mosquito trap,” Zhao Zhiwen said proudly. “With this, we should be able to sleep well tonight.”
He explained Croakie’s ability to them.
“Although it looks scary, it’s actually pretty friendly.” He also opened the door to his own room and asked Le Le to tell Croakie that after it finished eating the mosquitoes in his parents’ room, it should come over there next.

Then he hurriedly left with Le Le to help Jing Lin plant vegetables.
“This child!” Watching Zhao Zhiwen leave in such a rush, Zhou Yu became annoyed.
She cautiously peeked at Croakie crouching beside her bed, its long tongue occasionally shooting out.
She shivered. “It won’t jump onto the bed, will it?”
Zhao Chenghuai said, “I’ll keep an eye on it. Worst case, we wash the bedsheets.”
Judging from what their son said, this toad should actually be useful. The two of them were older and had barely slept the night before. After lunch, they originally wanted to take a nap, but every time they lay down, they felt mosquitoes biting them. In the end, they had no choice but to get up and chop wood instead.
When Zhao Zhiwen returned to Jing Lin’s house with Le Le and Duckie, Jing Lin was sitting under the eaves sorting through vegetable seeds.
Yan Fei was holding a hoe and working the soil, while Yan Lu stood nearby watching.
“You want to learn how to grow vegetables?” Jing Lin said. “Actually, you should just watch Uncle Zhao. I don’t really know much about this either.”
Yan Fei stayed silent. Of course, he couldn’t exactly tell Jing Lin that his real reason for coming was because he had ulterior motives.
Zhao Zhiwen looked at the seeds Jing Lin had picked. “You chose lettuce and scallions? Aren’t those afraid of high temperatures? Won’t they fail if you plant them now?”
Their family usually grew scallions by buying bulbs from outside and planting those. They had never tried planting from seeds.
Jing Lin explained, “I just want to test whether the spirit-gathering formation affects their growth habits.”
He divided the backyard into two sections. One had a spirit gathering array. The other was left in its natural state. He wanted to compare the differences between plants grown in these different environments. Each section was further divided into smaller patches. He planted lettuce, scallions, late-season cowpeas, and water spinach. Finally, he left one small patch empty.
Jing Lin suddenly remembered something and said that he wanted to transplant two autumn tomato plants from Yan Fei’s family that had already formed flower buds, as well as the heaven-facing chili pepper plants from Gao Honghai’s family that caused blisters upon contact.
Yan Fei then handed the hoe to Zhao Zhiwen and asked him to continue tilling the ground. He took Jing Lin and left.
The autumn tomatoes at Yan Fei’s home had been sown and grown from seedlings shortly after Zhou Feifei returned. Normally, the mature fruits would not be harvested until around November, but unexpectedly, they had formed flower buds overnight. The plants currently looked healthy, but whether they could actually bear fruit was still unknown. Because the tomatoes had still been seedlings at the time, all the plants that suddenly grew had been crowded together. However, none of them had fallen over. Most of them had simply been squeezed and deformed in their growth direction, causing the branches to become crooked. With a good flowerpot, they could even become decent ornamental plants. Jing Lin put on the gloves Yan Fei gave him, dug out two plants, and then the two of them went to Gao Honghai’s house.

Gao Honghai was in his fifties that year. His family had two children: the eldest son was Gao Changhui, who was twenty-four years old, and the younger daughter, Gao Yalan, who was seventeen and studying in the best high school in the county. When Gao Honghai heard that Jing Lin wanted his family’s heaven-facing chili peppers, he quickly said, “What do you want this thing for? I don’t even dare touch it.” As he spoke, he showed them a very noticeable blister on his arm that he had already popped.
He brought the two of them to his backyard and pointed at a pile of plants in the corner. “I already dug them all out with a hoe, roots and all. I don’t even dare burn them. I was planning to bury them directly. If you want them, just take them all.” That would save him the trouble of dealing with them again. This thing was so strange that he did not dare casually experiment. What if even the smoke produced from burning it was poisonous? He certainly wasn’t about to take that risk.
Jing Lin thanked Gao Honghai. Wearing gloves, he and Yan Fei packed more than a dozen heaven-facing chili pepper plants that had already wilted after being exposed to the sun into a basket they had brought with them.
On the way back, Jing Lin picked a chili pepper and looked at it. The originally smooth surface had already grown many tiny, soft bristles. He guessed that these were what caused Gao Honghai to develop a blister after touching it. It was similar to the kind of caterpillar that caused people’s skin to break out in bumps. As long as it was not touched directly with bare skin, it should be fine.
Yan Fei said, “This has completely turned into a different variety already. It can’t be eaten anymore, right?” If someone ate it, wouldn’t their intestines probably be destroyed?
The species that grew in nature were all extremely miraculous. The heaven-facing chili pepper in Jing Lin’s hand reminded him of the wild prickly pear fruit he had picked as a child. Its self-protection method was covering itself in thorns, but once the thorns on the skin were removed, it could be safely eaten. The heaven-facing chili pepper now seemed to be developing in the same direction.
When they arrived home, Zhao Zhiwen and Yan Lu were pulling weeds around Jing Lin’s house. Jing Lin told them to wait a moment and said he would plant the tomatoes and chili peppers first before coming out. In the backyard, Jing Lin took a kitchen knife and cut the heaven-facing chili pepper in half, revealing the plump and dense chili seeds inside. A tempting, rich fragrance drifted out.
“It seems to be coming from this chili pepper,” Yan Fei said.
“More accurately, it should be coming from these chili seeds,” Jing Lin said. Although the fragrance was strong, it was not overwhelming. If it could be eaten, it would surely make an excellent seasoning.
Jing Lin picked some full, mature heaven-facing chili peppers from near the bottom of the plants and prepared to dry them to keep the seeds. Then he planted all the plants, including the two autumn tomato plants. Finally, he watered everything.

With Yan Lu helping to pull weeds, the efficiency was extremely high. By the time Jing Lin and Yan Fei came out, more than half of the weeds had already been removed. Jing Lin quickly told Yan Lu to rest nearby, then joined Yan Fei in pulling weeds.
When Yan Fei and Yan Lu left, Jing Lin pulled out a basket of bokchoy for them to take back. He also gave Yan Lu a small bottle of jam. Since they had helped him for an entire afternoon, these were the only things he could offer in return.
Yan Fei and Yan Lu did not refuse either. Giving and receiving back and forth was how relationships became closer.
Zhao Zhiwen left together with them. When he returned home, Croakie had already wandered through every corner of his house. Seeing that its belly was slightly bigger than before, it seemed that it had eaten quite a lot that afternoon. So he picked up a towel and cautiously tried to hug Croakie. When the toad let out a croak but did not resist, Zhao Zhiwen gathered his courage, picked it up, and hurried toward Yan Fei’s house.
That afternoon, he had seen that his future father-in-law and mother-in-law both had red mosquito bite bumps on their faces and hands. Since there was still plenty of time before bedtime, if he sent Croakie over now, their family would also be able to sleep well.
After Yan Fei and the others left, Jing Lin continued studying the chili seeds. He removed his gloves, but his fingers kept rubbing against them unconsciously. Finally, he closed his eyes and reached out his hand, thinking that whatever happened, at worst he would just get a few blisters on his hand like Gao Honghai. It would not kill him.
Fortunately, when his fingers touched the chili seeds, there was no bad reaction. Jing Lin felt happy inside. It seemed his guess had been correct. The fuzz growing on the outside of the chili were only a layer of protection it had developed for itself. Touching the chili seeds inside would not cause any problems for their fingers.
Jing Lin picked many more fully mature heaven-facing chili peppers, removed the seeds inside, washed them all clean, and left a small amount outside. He placed the rest evenly spread out on a plate to air-dry, planning to take them outside to dry in the sun once it came out the next day.
After that, Jing Lin placed the chili seeds he had separated onto his hand and entered the storage room. He caught two chicks: one that he had observed yesterday to be picky about food, and one that was not picky at all. He opened his palm to reveal the chili seeds and held them toward the two chicks’ mouths.
The non-picky chick had been screaming miserably ever since Jing Lin caught it. Even after seeing Jing Lin hold out his hand for a long time, it still did not peck at the seeds. The picky chick, however, obediently stayed still and did not run around. Before Jing Lin even brought his hand closer, it stretched out its neck and pecked at the chili seeds in his palm. It did not stop until not a single seed remained; then it flapped its wings and cried twice.
So Jing Lin kept the picky chick and released the non-picky one. To prevent the newly planted vegetable field from being destroyed, Jing Lin also drew a low-level illusion array and arranged it around the vegetable field to stop the chicks from entering to search for food.
Afterward, taking advantage of the remaining daylight to save on kerosene, Jing Lin began preparing dinner. His mouth had not had much taste these past few days, so he took some dried chilies he had bought earlier, picked a large amount of bokchoy, and made a stir-fried bokchoy dish. Then he took out a can of luncheon meat, sliced it, and fried it in oil. The smell was especially fragrant.
While Jing Lin was cooking, Duckie was extremely unhappy about the chick wandering around in the backyard. Originally, it had been playing with Le Le in the living room, but when it saw the chick taking advantage of Jing Lin being in the kitchen and walking into the living room, it became furious. Feeling that its territory had been invaded, it charged toward the chick like a little cannonball. It continuously pecked at the chick with its beak and rammed it with its body, knocking the chick over and even making it tumble several times.
The chick felt that this goose was far too fierce and that it had absolutely no chance of winning. After losing several feathers, it screeched and fled from that troublesome place.
Looking at the defeated chick running away, Duckie raised its head proudly, full of a domineering aura as if it ruled the world. However, this appearance did not last long. When it heard Le Le calling it from the living room, it flapped its little wings and happily waddled back.
