Crossing to Live in the Wilderness Plains 062

Chapter 62

These past couple of days, Aze stayed at home and took the initiative to take over cooking. Currently there were only the two of them for meals. Chen Qi made a low table and put it by the fire to be used as a dining table. When it wasn’t needed, it was very convenient to put it away.

Aze set the prepared dishes onto the table. Today, he steamed some sweet potatoes for the staple, then stir fried some meat, and made fried meat patties with cabbage. There weren’t many dishes, but the portions were very generous. When everything was ready, he found Chen Qi standing by the window, staring blankly. Aze tightened his grip on the chopsticks. “Chen Qi, it’s time to eat.”

Chen Qi came back to his senses and beckoned to Aze, motioning for him to come over.

Aze set down the chopsticks and walked over, “What is it?”

Chen Qi smiled and pointed out of the window. The snow in the yard had just been cleared yesterday. The reddish-brown, weedless ground was mixed with white snowflakes and looked messy. Every time after the snow was cleared, the animal skin boots would be covered in mud, and they had to change footwear before entering the house. It was very troublesome. “Aze, do you think we should pave some stone roads in the yard?”

“Stone roads?”

En, spread stone slabs on the ground so that we don’t have to step in the mud all the time.” Chen Qi explained. “I recall that Azhang and the others still had a lot of stone slabs leftover from when they were building the houses. That should be enough to pave some roads with.”

Aze had yet to oppose any of Chen Qi’s opinions. He nodded slightly, “Okay.”

Since Chen Qi decided to do it, he then went on to do it. After the meal, he ran to meet with Azhang and Ka Luo. Everyone was just idling around. When they heard that Chen Qi wanted to pave some roads, they all came out to help.

Chen Qi simply outlined the general scope of the road. It would be a road that connected the three front doors and then led to the main gate at the front of the wall. Since the stone slabs would directly be laid on the ground, they wouldn’t even need any gum fruits.

The leftover stone slabs had been piled up along the wall in Azhang’s sundries room. There were a whole lot of them. Each of the few females could carry several stone slabs on their own. Chen Qi moved to stand at either side of the planned road and instructed the others on how to lay the stone slabs.

Chen Qi had a bit of an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Since he wanted to pave some roads, he had to make sure they would look as nice as possible. He had Aze cut to size some of the stone slabs that were too large, and he had to have the roads be of about the same width. With this level of pickiness, the task of paving these not-too-long roads actually took the whole day.

Ajing was concerned about the little wolf cub dirtying its fur if it ran about outside. It was now winter time, and the pup was still too young to be bathed. He could only carry the little wolf cub and stand to the side, watching the others busying about.

The paved roads were still a little loose after they were laid, and it would take some amount of walking over it before it would solidify more. Chen Qi walked back and forth on it with satisfaction. Now, when he visited next door, his shoes would not get muddy.

The only tool for light in this world was fire. Chen Qi had made torches previously, but nowadays, with the occasional snowstorms blowing through, which made the torches less effective in the winter. Chen Qi thought about it for a while and decided to make a lamp.

He tied a rectangular wooden frame together using root threads. The base was a wooden board and cloth was stitched on the four sides. As he took in the appearance of the white cloth lamp, it felt a bit unlucky, so he dyed the cloth sides with the red dye-fruit solution. After that was done, he had Aze make a simple bone bowl. Then he went to Ali’s house for some cocoon yarn threads and went outside the house to grab a piece of frozen fat to melt down into oil.

The cocoon yarn thread was weaved into a rope as thick as the little finger, and the melted fat was stored in a pottery bowl. The wick made out of the cocoon yarn thread was then soaked in the oil, and it was left to soak for about half an hour before it was removed and left to dry by the fire. Chen Qi found a small piece of cork and made a hole in its middle, then inserted the wick into it. Next, he poured a little bit of water into the bone bowl and then added oil. He carefully moved the bowl that was about two-thirds full of oil into the wood frame with cloth sides, and then put the wick into the bone bowl. The wick was very long and it looped along the bottom of the bowl. Since it was supported by the cork, it would not sink into the oil. Chen Qi put the tip of a wooden stick into the fire and used it to light the wick. The cloth sides were not transparent, so only a rather dim light shone through it.

“Aze, help me build a lamppost.” Admiring this simple oil lamp, Chen Qi couldn’t put it down and quickly called Aze for help.

The lamppost was only about half a meter tall and was staked in next to the newly-built flagstone road by the door. It was built with two boards on it, one as the base and the other as the cover, in order to keep out snowflakes. Chen Qi set the cloth lamp on the lamppost. The faint light could just illuminate the small area under the column.

Chen Qi had Aze make six such lampposts, one for each side of the road in front of each house and all of them were equipped with simple oil lamps. The surrounding ice wall was almost four meters away, so Chen Qi was not concerned that the light would spread too far out and provoke any terrible creatures.

Ali stared with amazement at the red cloth covered oil lamp that was emitting a light reddish light. “Chen Qi, are these also part of your customs?”

Chen Qi gave a light cough and winked quickly at Ali. Ali hurriedly changed the subject, praising the oil lamp for its usefulness and how much more convenient it would be when they went out in the future.

After Ali gradually lost his ability to transform into beast form, his eyesight also declined a lot. At night, if the moonlight was slightly weaker, he would not be able to see anything. This thing Chen Qi made called the oil lamp may not be too useful for normal females, but for the males and injured females, it gave them the extra option to go out at night. If the oil lamps were lit all over the tribe, then even if the females were not there, the other people would not need to just close up in their homes at night.

After paving the roads, Ka Luo and Ake had gone into their house. Even after Chen Qi spent a long time outside messing around with the lamps and posts, neither of them came out. Chen Qi was afraid that they might be doing some kind of exercise and so was too embarrassed to invite them out to watch the lights at night. Ajing was still very young and fell asleep, curled up in bed soon after feeding the little wolf cub.

After lighting all the lamps, Ali noticed a specific person was presently occupied and he leaned over to whisper into Chen Qi’s ear, “I have already made the clothes you asked me to make. Do you want to try them first? If there are any issues, I will alter them.”

Chen Qi nodded and turned to Azhang and said, “Azhang, weren’t you curious about how the oil lamps were made? Aze has already done a few for me, so have him teach you.”

When Chen Qi finished saying that, he found an excuse to go to Ali’s house, but Aze unexpectedly held him back by the sleeve.”It’s already late tonight and Uncle Azhang must be tired. I can teach him tomorrow.”

Chen Qi looked at Azhang questioningly. The corner of Azhang’s mouth twitched. He lived with Ali and naturally knew what Chen Qi and Ali were doing in secret. So he stepped forward and told Aze, “I’m fine, isn’t it very simple? I can learn it tonight.”

Aze paused, slowly released the sleeve he was holding, and pursed his lips, not saying anything else.

Chen Qi was eager to see the finished product and didn’t notice Aze’s affected mood. He smiled gratefully at Azhang and left with Ali.

After the thick hide curtain was completely lowered, Azhang patted Aze on the head and playfully scolded him, “Are you really wearing this ghost face because you’re worried about Chen Qi getting abducted? Without even considering how old your Uncle Ali is, if Chen Qi had any crooked thoughts, would I still let him into my house?”

Aze looked at the door curtain, his face tensed. He stood there quietly for a long time before he finally turned around and headed back. “Let’s go, I’ll teach you how to make oil lamps.”

Azhang sighed secretly in his heart. At first, he thought that Chen Qi’s plan was quite good, so he helped the other party hide it from Aze. But now, seeing Aze’s expression, he probably let his imagination run wild and ran himself into a dead end, right? It seemed it was necessary to remind Chen Qi not to go too over the top with things. Once the plan was revealed, it was still possible to move forward.

When Chen Qi came back, Aze had already gone to sleep. This was the first time Chen Qi saw Aze fall asleep in advance without waiting for him. Although the distance between their few houses was very close, when Chen Qi came back in from the outside, he still brought a chill in with him. He threw a few pieces of firewood into the fire to make it grow bigger, and it wasn’t until his body was nicely warmed up from the fire that he took off his fur coat and climbed into the bed.

Before, Aze had replaced the two fur blankets for one that was big enough to cover a pair of grown men, which he’d secretly requested Ali make for them. But tonight, the man had actually reverted back to the single-person quilts.

Recalling Azhang’s words of advice, Chen Qi stopped in his movements to get into the quilt. “Aze, are you angry?”

Aze had his back turned to Chen Qi, so Chen Qi could not see the other’s expression and couldn’t tell if he was really asleep or just pretending to be. Chen Qi climbed into bed, and propped half of his body up against Aze. Feeling the familiar warmth near him. Aze’s eyelashes moved unconsciously. Chen Qi chuckled lightly and proceeded to get out of bed to Aze’s room and retrieved the big quilt that had been replaced. When the quilt was warm from the fire, he then replaced the two single-person blankets atop the bed on the fire keng.

Aze let Chen Qi continue his actions, and with his stiff body, he continued pretending to be asleep.

Chen Qi got into bed after he finished fixing the situation with the fur blankets. This time he didn’t hold Aze’s hand. Instead, he moved his hand over Aze’s lean waist, where the lines were tight and the skin felt nice to the touch. Chen Qi could not help but linger for a bit and ate a few handfuls of tofu*. He felt Aze’s body get more and more tense, and it wasn’t until he pretended to be about to wake up before the hand stopped.

Chen Qi chuckled contentedly, leaned his head into the crook of Aze’s neck and half-wrapped Aze into his arms. The warm breath against his skin tickled Aze’s neck. “I’m sorry for causing you to misunderstand.”

Hearing Chen Qi’s words, Aze’s body moved.

“Originally I wanted to give you a surprise when I got it all ready. I didn’t expect my first time doing something like this would fail so hard.” Chen Qi recalled a colleague of his who had set up candles in the shape of a heart in the company lobby in order to propose to his girlfriend. He had held a handful of red roses in his arms, and in the midst of the crowd trying to leave at the end of the work day, he blocked the doorway and loudly yelled for the girl to marry him. At that time, Chen Qi had felt that this kind of behavior was quite ridiculous, but he still remembered the girl’s smiling expression as she happily agreed.

Unexpectedly, when it was his turn to try this kind of grand action, he ended up falling pretty short. His ideal proposal scene was to prepare a delicious meal on a sunny day, half kneeling in front of the other with a ring, and then asking him if he would marry him. Not in this setting where the two of them were lying in bed where the other man was even angry at him.

However, Chen Qi hadn’t wanted Aze to misunderstand. He had done those things without telling him in order to make the man happy. It had not been his intention to upset him in the course of trying to make him happy.

After thinking about it, Chen Qi became a little nervous. He sat half-propped up and straightened the expression on his face. Then he asked, sincerely, “Aze, would you be my mate? To be with me, the two of us, for the rest of our lives?”
