Chapter 53
Since Ajing had stated that he would take care of the little wolf cub, that night, he moved its little nest next to his pillow and watched it fall asleep after eating and drinking its fill before going to sleep himself.
Once it had stopped snowing, it had not snowed again. The yard was not covered in snow, so Chen Qi also did not plan to go outside to pile more snow onto the wall. Ake went back to the tribe early in the morning to bring over their stockpile of food. Although Aze still did not agree for them to stay here, he didn’t stop them either. He even helped take turns with Ake to move their things over.
In the winter, the gum fruits dried very slowly. Normally, it only took about a day for them to be dried. This time, it took five days before they were dry enough for them to pave the roof on Ka Luo’s new house.
While waiting for the new houses to dry, Chen Qi took the remaining people to clean up the weeds in the newly enclosed yard. Due to the previous surprise discovery of ginseng, Chen Qi especially paid attention to everything in the grass this time. Of course, ginseng was not something that could be found everyday. The whole yard was cleaned up, but nothing useful was found. Chen Qi couldn’t help but feel disappointed.
The cleaned up weeds were neatly tied into bundles with ropes, and there were more than a dozen bundles by the end of it. Chen Qi rolled up his sleeves and carried one of the bundles back to the living room. He said to Ka Luo, “Come on, I’ll make something good to eat.” Turning disappointment and anger into appetite was something that Chen Qi often did. Of course, there used to be a whole food street at his disposal by just going downstairs and turning left. Now he could only make it himself.
In order to maintain the temperature of the fire keng, the newly-built stove in the house always had a fire lit, and bone soup was left to simmer on it. There were more than a dozen boxes of hydrochoerus dragon bones alone. It was enough for Chen Qi to cook with for a long time.
Chen Qi moved the pottery dish that contained the soup to one side and in its place, set another pottery dish. He filled it up halfway with water then grabbed some potatoes from the storage room, washed them and put them in the pottery dish to boil, covering the dish with a lid. The lid was cut directly from a thick tree’s trunk. Not only did Chen Qi make the pot cover from the tree trunk, he also made chopping boards and wooden bowls. The wooden bowls had to be carved, which took a long time as well as ample patience. Up till now, Chen Qi had only finished two. Probably because a lot of thought and time was spent on them, these two wooden bowls were the most exquisite pieces among all the wooden products in the house.
While letting the potatoes cook, Chen Qi had Ka Luo go outside to take a large piece of pork belly to be defrosted. After it was thawed out, he asked Ka Luo to cut it into two portions, one to be diced, and one to be minced for later use. Chen Qi took out the slightly shriveled scallions and garlic from the storage room, mashed up a piece of wild ginger, melted a spoonful of hydrochoerus dragon fat into oil, and mixed them together.

Ajing’s wound was still not completely healed. Chen Qi did not dare to give him solid food, so he planned to make some mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes were very simple. First boil the potatoes until they were soft, and let them cool off before peeling them. Chen Qi took out a pottery bowl, put a peeled potato in it, and used a spoon to mash it. The firewood in the stove had been removed by Chen Qi, who tasked Ka Luo to use the weeds they’d collected from the yard to be burned for the fire. Chen Qi put a little bit of hydrochoerus dragon oil in the pottery dish used as the pan. After the oil was heated, the previously prepared ginger, scallion and garlic were placed into the pan and stir-fried for a while. Then the mashed potatoes were added to the pan, stir-fried until it turned slightly golden brown, and served in a pottery dish.
Chen Qi cooked up a bowl of mashed potatoes with just ginger and scallion, and then made another bowl of mashed potatoes cooked with the minced meat. After it was cooked, he handed a spoon to Ka Luo, who was already desperate for a taste. Ka Luo didn’t hesitate to scoop a spoonful of the ginger and scallion mashed potatoes into his mouth. It was soft and waxy. Although it smelled delicious, the texture felt a bit strange to Ka Luo, who was used to eating meat.
After Ka Luo swallowed the food in his mouth, he scooped up another spoonful, this time of the mashed potatoes with minced meat. Perhaps because it had more of a meaty aroma, Ka Luo’s eyes sparkled as soon as it entered his mouth. “Chen Qi, I like this.” Ka Luo said as he scooped another large spoonful into his mouth..
Chen Qi filled half a wooden bowl with the ginger and scallion mashed potatoes and offered it to Ajing on the fire keng. Ajing hesitated for a moment before accepting it. He looked at Chen Qi, who smiled and gently rubbed his little head. “Try it. See if you like the flavor.”
Ajing nodded obediently and quietly ate spoonful after spoonful. Ajing was expressionless though, so Chen Qi could not tell whether he actually liked it or not. After Ajing finished eating all the mashed potatoes in the bowl, Chen Qi took the empty bowl and asked, “How was it? Was the taste to your liking?”
Ajing nodded, “It’s delicious.”
Next, Chen Qi scooped the mashed potatoes with minced meat and filled another half bowlful for him. Ajing still quietly finished it, bit by bit.
Chen Qi turned the remaining boiled potatoes into four large bowls of mashed potatoes. Then he took out a few more potatoes from the storage room, as well as some sweet potatoes, and boiled and peeled them all. The beastmen preferred to eat meat. This time, Chen Qi mixed the diced meat and minced meat into the mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes. Then he kneaded the mashed potatoes into patties, heated oil in a pottery dish and put the potato patties in, frying them until both sides were golden brown. The potato cakes were fried until they were crispy. Ka Luo preferred the taste of the potato cakes over the mashed potatoes.
Azhang came over in the morning of the day when the gum fruit applied on the new house had finished drying, and this time he came along with Ali, who Chen Qi hadn’t seen for a long time. The other females from the tribe who had helped build the house didn’t come with them.
After setting Ali down, Azhang did not immediately get to the task of paving the roof for his new home. Instead, he gathered Chen Qi and the others together, and they sat by the fire in Chen Qi’s living room. Azhang was sitting up straight, his expression one of seriousness that Chen Qi had never seen on him before. He looked Chen Qi straight in the eye and slowly spoke, “Chen Qi, I hope you can be the chief of the Rock-Mountain Tribe.”

Azhang’s words were not just surprising to Chen Qi, but even Aze and Ka Luo, who were sitting by him, stared at Azhang in shock. Only Ake and Ali’s expressions did not change. It seemed that they had long known what Azhang had planned.
“Uncle Azhang, why do you want Chen Qi to be our chief?” It was Ka Luo who raised the question first.
Chen Qi wanted to know that too. He could count the number of visits he’d made to the Rock-Mountain Tribe on one hand. Azhang had been doing a good job as the tribe’s acting chief. Why would he suddenly want him to be the chief?
“I’ve already discussed this matter with the rest of the tribe.” Azhang looked around at all of them in the room and continued, “Although I don’t know which tribe you came from, Chen Qi, you know a lot of things. This is obvious to all of us. Our tribe is no longer the Rock-Mountain Tribe. It is just a settlement for those of us who did not want to leave. You’ve all seen it for yourselves, the tribe’s defenses are too weak nowadays. This time, we were attacked by only two hyena-drakes, yet almost half of the tribe was destroyed, and the child, Ajing, was so badly injured. At that time, I actually thought he could not survive. But I asked Ake to bring him here for the off-chance that you could help. I didn’t expect Chen Qi to really be able to save him.” As Azhang said this, the corners of his eyes were a little red, and he bowed deeply towards Chen Qi.
Hearing Azhang mentioning himself, Ajing looked over. His strokes across the little wolf cub’s belly slowed down slightly as he perked up his ears and listened to the words from the few of them by the fire.
“From making traps, refining salt stones and drilling into wood to start fires, to building houses. There’s also the ice walls you suggested to build. These are all things we have never thought about and done before. These ideas of yours allowed those in the tribe who were no longer capable of hunting to be able to hunt food, and those who were not capable of fighting to be able to live in a safe place. So I hope to move the tribe here and that Chen Qi, you could be the new chief of the tribe.
Chen Qi turned to look at Aze, then turned his eyes back to Azhang. Instead of responding to Azhang’s words, he asked, “Didn’t everyone from the tribe go to the Lion-Wolf Tribe?”
Azhang shook his head and explained, “They will only be at the Lion-Wolf Tribe for the winter. Tribal migration is not that simple. The rest of the tribe are old or females who have been injured and lost their ability to turn into beast forms. After all, this is the wilderness. It is difficult for them to survive the winter without enough houses to keep warm. There is a special place for old, unmated females in the Lion-Wolf Tribe, and there are also people from the former Rock-Mountain Tribe to take care of them. I had discussed this with their chief and will bring them back after winter.”
Chen Qi was a little entangled. Aze had moved out of the tribe because he didn’t want to live there. Yet now, Azhang wants to move the tribe over here instead. Chen Qi hesitated for a moment and said, “You need Aze’s consent to move the tribe here. This is Aze’s home.”
Azhang turned to Aze. This was a child he’d watched live his childhood and grow up. Azhang naturally knew his temperament. He didn’t immediately move everyone from the tribe over and would consider Aze’s opinions. Azhang hoped that him and Ali moving over first would allow Aze to adapt for a period of time. After all, Aze would not reject them if it was just him and Ali.

Aze held Chen Qi’s hand. “Uncle Azhang wants to move the tribe over, so move it. But this is the wilderness, after all, and the defenses around here are not ideal. If the hyena-drakes invade again, they may easily enter and attack us.”
Azhang was a little surprised. He had thought of numerous plans and had been prepared to spend the winter persuading Aze to accept the idea of the tribe’s migration, but Aze just agreed without even needing to think about it.
“Aze, have you thought it over? Although we want to move the tribe over, I hope you will not force yourself.” Ali interjected, a little worried, and then quickly explained, “The remaining tribespeople of the Rock-Mountain Tribe would not reject you just because you don’t have a pregnancy pattern, nor would they blame you if any accidents befell the tribe.”
Aze interrupted Ali’s explanation, “Uncle Ali, I understand what you have said. I have been back to the tribe often these days, so I am not against living with people in the tribe.” Aze turned to look at Chen Qi. “I like the tribe very much, and I like the people in the tribe very much. If the tribe wants to move here, I have no objections.”
Hearing Aze’s answer, Azhang breathed a sigh of relief, “Then, Chen Qi, would you be willing to be the chief of the tribe?”
Chen Qi shook his head. “No, I am not fit to be the chief.” Azhang was a little disappointed, then Chen Qi added, “I think it is more appropriate for Azhang to continue to be the tribe’s chief. If you have any questions or concerns that need my help in the future, I will do my best to help as long as it is within my means.”
Azhang wanted to say more, but he saw Ake winking at him and shaking his head, so Azhang swallowed his words of persuasion.
So the matter of the tribe’s migration after winter ended was settled.
After breakfast and cleaning up the bowls and chopsticks, Chen Qi went to the bathroom where Aze was squeezing the fig juice onto a greasy pottery dish. “Aze, are you really alright with the tribe moving over here?”
Aze stopped his actions and looked up to see Chen Qi crouching beside him. He smiled. “I did meet some unhappy things in the tribe before, so if I said I didn’t mind at all, that would be a lie.”
“Then why did you agree to Azhang’s request? If Azhang wants my help, I can still help them to make arrangements at the original tribe’s location, and I can also improve the tribe’s defense there.”
Aze shook his head. “I don’t hate the people of the tribe. I didn’t live in the tribe before because I didn’t want Ka Luo to stick to me all the time, and,” Aze paused and leaned close to Chen Qi’s ear, his warm breath made the tip of his ears itch. “Chen Qi always smiles beautifully when there are many people.”

Thank you for the updates! I can’t seem to comment on the last chapter so I’ll thank you for the double updates here. The story development is going towards a great direction. I mean I don’t mind CQ and Aze being just the two of them, but it would be great to see Aze finally surrounding himself with dependable friends and tribesmen again. He’s too sweet to stay sad.
It does get better, fortunately! Thanks for reading and commenting.
