Grandfather Yu passed away in the coldest of winter with a smile on his face.<\/span><\/p>

Yu Zhen, his grandson, knelt before his coffin and burned<\/span> yellow paper<\/span><\/a> in offering. Strong winds and heavy snow howled outside, making the wooden door of the temple creak. A small bulb overhead swayed back and forth due to the draft. The coffin and Yu Zhen\u2019s shadows stretched and contracted with each turn of the lightbulb. The dim light gave the room the feel of a horror movie.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cI asked you to move in with me, but you didn\u2019t want to. Great. Now you can\u2019t live with me anymore. What\u2019s so good about this rundown place? Nowadays, who goes to Taoist temples for fortune-telling? Who would come to a temple like this in the countryside?\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Yu Zhen sniffled and raised an ash-covered hand to wipe his face. The soot smeared with the tears on his face. He cut an extremely sorry figure.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cI said I\u2019d renovate for you, but you didn\u2019t want it. I wanted to accompany you here, but you didn\u2019t allow it. Why were you so stubborn?\u201d he continued in a choked voice. His straight back hunched over, and his dirty hands wiped at his face again.<\/span><\/p>

The wind grew even stronger, and the snow drifted inside.<\/span><\/p>

He remembered a time, as a child, his grandfather looked at him seriously. His heart tightened. He clenched his fingers into a fist and threw the bracelet directly into the brazier.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cYou always said I\u2019m very blessed that I was wronged in my previous life, so this life would be prosperous. But look at us now. Our days living as grandfather and grandson. . . you loved to make up stories to coax me, why not coax me a few more years?\u201d<\/span><\/p>

The Ping-An bracelet, strung together by a red string, crashed into the brazier and hissed under the heat. The flame soared high, and the pungent smell of burning plastic filled the air. Yu Zhen, blasted with a faceful of the flame\u2019s heat and stench, straightened up. The odor grew in strength, and his sadness grew with it.<\/span><\/p>

In his fright, the cries that had yet to escape were swallowed back down. His eyes narrowed, and he pressed his lips tightly shut. His shoulders were hunched for a few seconds, then he stood and rushed outside the temple.<\/span><\/p>

The temple was remote. For a few miles around, there was only farmland and a small hill behind it. Usually, few people visited. There was only one bare, narrow, dirt road leading to the entrance. Both sides of the road were lined with trees, and it looked eerie at night.<\/span><\/p>

Because of the snow, the dirt road was coated in thick white, and deep tire tracks were visible.<\/span><\/p>

Yu Zhen ran closer. He saw the tracks led straight into the trees. At the end of the skidmarks, there was a damaged, red sports car wrapped around a broken tree. Frightened, Yu Zhen took in a gulp of cold air, rushed over, and peered into the driver\u2019s side. He could see two people inside. Reaching out, he pulled on the door but couldn\u2019t open it. He called out to the people inside but received no response. His body shook uncontrollably as he fished out his phone and called the police and other emergency services.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cI just wanted to give Grandfather a good final send-off. You rich people, you might have nothing better to do, but why do you have to come to this place\u2013where even the birds don\u2019t come to shit\u2013and drive into trees? . . . Hello . . . The place is Lotus Village, An Yang Town. . .\u201d<\/span><\/p>

When he ended the call, he lifted his sleeve and wiped away the snow on his face. He tried the door again, but it didn\u2019t budge an inch. The two people inside didn\u2019t move, as if already dead. His heart palpitated, and he felt like crying again.<\/span><\/p>

He searched his surroundings and found a brick. He slammed it against the rear door window with his eyes squeezed shut then tossed aside the brick and reached inside the car. Once the door was open, he climbed inside.<\/span><\/p>

Yu Zhen could finally judge the situation more clearly.<\/span><\/p>

In the front seats was a man and a woman. Both were young. The man, in the driver\u2019s seat, was bent to protect the woman in the passenger\u2019s seat, shielding her under his body. They were covered in blood and their condition unclear.<\/span><\/p>

Yu Zhen first checked the man. His skin was warm, but it didn\u2019t seem like he was breathing. Yu Zhen\u2019s fingers trembled, and he recited a chant for the dead his grandfather taught him when he was young. While chanting, his hand shifted to the woman underneath.<\/span><\/p>

A steady pulse beat against his fingertips. The breath he held suddenly rushed out of him. Leaning forward, he didn\u2019t dare move them much for fear of causing more damage. He looked at the two people\u2019s wounds carefully, thinking about stopping their bleeding first.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cHold on, the doctor will come soon, hold on.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The man\u2019s temperature was dropping slowly, but the woman\u2019s pulse remained steady. Yu Zhen untied the white cloth around his waist and clumsily wrapped it around the wound on the man\u2019s arm. Remembering his grandfather, who would never open his eyes again, the tears that had been stalled began to fall.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cDon\u2019t die. . .\u201d <\/span>Why do people die?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>

Drip. Drip.<\/span><\/p>

The warm tears splashed against the back of the man\u2019s hand. As if burned, the man\u2019s slender fingers jerked.<\/span><\/p>

The snow came to a stop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Outside, the siren of a police car and ambulances echoed. Yu Zhen hid behind the door of the temple and peeked through a crack. When he saw two officers walking towards him, his panic receded. He took two deep breaths. Knowing he couldn\u2019t escape, Yu Zhen opened the door.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cDid you call the police?\u201d The older officer asked when he spotted Yu Zhen in the doorway.<\/span><\/p>

Yu Zhen glanced at the accident surrounded by the cruiser and two ambulances. He nodded and asked cautiously, \u201cHow are the people in the car?\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\u201cThey\u2019ve been rescued. The man\u2019s injury is a bit severe, but the woman wasn\u2019t hurt too badly. There are no major problems,\u201d the younger policeman replied. His eyes swept over the cloth on Yu Zhen\u2019s arm, noticed the coffin in the mourning hall, and nudged his older partner in the arm.<\/span><\/p>

The other officer also saw the situation inside and glanced at Yu Zhen\u2019s face, which still contained youthfulness. His eyes were compassionate, and he asked in a gentle voice, \u201cAre you here alone? Where\u2019s your family?\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Yu Zhen shook his head. \u201cThere is no one else, just me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

He looked at the ambulance and asked for confirmation, \u201cIs that man just\u2013just injured heavily?\u201d<\/span> Instead of being cold?<\/span><\/i><\/p>

The younger officer sighed. Yu Zhen looked at him with a tilted head. Just as he prepared to bid them farewell and head back into the temple, his vision swam and blackened. The chill in the soles of his feet spread upward. He swayed and fell to the ground.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cHey! What happened?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cYoung man, what happened? Are you feeling unwell somewhere?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cHurry! Come help me move him!\u201d<\/span><\/p>

The chill invaded Yu Zhen\u2019s entire body. His head was particularly painful. With determination, Yu Zhen forced his eyes to stay open as he was moved and saw the officers\u2019 lips open and close. But it was a strange, low voice that echoed in his ear.<\/span><\/p>
