Farrell Lewis was one of the four top conductors.<\/p>\n\n

As chief conductor and music director of the Dresden Symphony Orchestra, Farrell Lewis had many great accomplishments to his name. Unlike many maestros who started as a pianist turned conductor, Farrell\u2019s achievements with the piano were less than his achievements with the violin.<\/p>\n\n

Such a great violin master and conductor was praised by Master Akkad as a \u201cgood teacher\u201d?! This was a mentor students all over the world dreamt of, ah!<\/p>\n\n

But. . . Qi Mu was excluded from this list of students.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cAngel, your skill with tremolo is excellent, but I had hoped you would be more decisive with the overtone and show the true excitement of \u300aThe Lark<\/a>\u300b. Like this. . .\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Farrell took the violin from Qi Mu\u2019s hands and demonstrated.<\/p>\n\n

The delicate violin was clear in his hands. Though there were differences between his and Qi Mu\u2019s technique, his performance showed the aesthetic romance unique to Parisians.<\/p>\n\n

Farrell was a French musician. Because he was the current conductor, his musical style deeply influenced the orchestra. It made Dresden, once classically German, romantic and gentle.<\/p>\n\n

Although Qi Mu felt helpless in the face of each \u201cAngel\u201d the master uttered, he had to admit he was young and less experienced compared to the other man. During the three days of practice, he listened to the master\u2019s guidance with the utmost respect and soon won his recognition.<\/p>\n\n

With a smile, the master said, \u201cAngel, if you perform \u300aThe Lark\u300b for next week\u2019s assessment, I believe. . . it will be hard to find someone across all of Paris to accompany you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Qi Mu interjected, politely, \u201cThank you for your advice, Master Farrell. But. . . Professor didn\u2019t seem like he wanted me to take the assessment with this piece.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Over the two weeks of practice, Akkad gave him three pieces to perfect and proclaimed that when he got back to Paris, he would personally listen to Qi Mu performances.<\/p>\n\n

To be recognized by Reed Akkad?<\/p>\n\n

Well. . . It was even harder than gaining Farrell\u2019s approval.<\/p>\n\n

Akkad\u2019s temper was so much worse. He wouldn\u2019t let even the speck of a flaw pass.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

Farrell frowned. \u201cThat fellow just wants you to play a full-court song and make his own prestige rise. \u300aThe Lark\u300b is only two minutes long, but I think Angel\u2019s \u300aThe Lark\u300b could take first place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Farrel laughed, \u201cAngel, play this piece. I\u2019ll let Reed know. How can he treat his lovely student so harshly? Reed is so insensitive, you\u2019re practicing hard every day with so little time to relax.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Farrell was right. Before he saw Qi Mu\u2019s dutiful practice, he would never believe a 22-year-old could, and would, practice from 8 am to 8 pm every single day.<\/p>\n\n

Moreover, the pieces he practiced were never simple. Each and every one of them required a high level of skill.<\/p>\n\n

The students at Paris\u2019 National Conservatory of Music were all so excellent, and most would become the backbone of the industry a decade after their graduation. If the pieces Qi Mu practiced every day were handed to Dylan next door, it would take him at least a week to prepare.<\/p>\n\n

The deadlines Akkad set for Qi Mu were never more than 3 days.<\/p>\n\n

Such strong pressure concerned Farrell. But, to his surprise, the beautiful young man in front of him shook his head. \u201cMr. Farrell, Professor hopes I can graduate early, so don\u2019t stop him. He knows my limits. Please don\u2019t worry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

The bright sunshine illuminated the pristine room like a golden awn. It shone from behind Qi Mu, surrounding him with a thin golden halo, hazy and gentle.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

Farrell was stunned. He automatically reached for his phone and unlocked the screen. He had to make sure this scene was captured.<\/p>\n\n

Qi Mu frowned. \u201cMaster Farrel, did you. . . ?\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cOh, Angel, you\u2019re so cute! Your teacher hasn\u2019t seen you for a long time, he must miss you a lot, eh? I took your picture and sent it over to show him his lovely student. Now he\u2019s even livelier!\u201d<\/p>\n\n

After spending the day practicing, the sky outside was dark. In the summer, the sun went down at 8 o\u2019clock, giving way to the moon. Qi Mu carefully wiped away the rosin powder on his violin\u2019s panel then placed it in its case.<\/p>\n\n

Picking up the case, he prepared to leave. He saw Farrell on the sofa, still gazing at his phone. He didn\u2019t know who the master was texting.<\/p>\n\n

After spending three days with this maestro, Qi Mu decided he liked Farrell.<\/p>\n\n

He was a talented master with a good temper and lots of patience. It was no wonder he was ranked third on the poll for the best-tempered conductor, right after Boswell from the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Dorenza of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.<\/p>\n\n

Of course. . . If he could stop calling him \u201cAngel,\u201d Qi Mu would rank him number one in his heart.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cMr. Farrel, are you ready to leave? Almost everyone has left already.\u201d With violin case in his hand, Qi Mu said, \u201cIf you don\u2019t mind, we can walk together. My place is closer than yours, but I can accompany you half-way there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Farrell was still typing like a madman on his keyboard. Finally, he said, \u201cAngel, could you wait a little longer? Just ten minutes, then we\u2019ll leave together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Ten minutes wasn\u2019t long, so Qi Mu agreed.<\/p>\n\n

There wasn\u2019t anything to do, Qi Mu thought, turning his eyes left and right. He picked up his phone but remembered something before he could unlock it. There was an excellent record player in his professor\u2019s lounge.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

Qi Mu already brought the record to the university, intending to borrow Akkad\u2019s record player. But until now, he had been too busy to use it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

Now was a great opportunity.<\/p>\n\n

Qi Mu set down his violin case, leaving it in the violin room, and moved to the lounge.<\/p>\n\n

As for Farrell? He was having the time of his life in the group chat.<\/p>\n\n

The mild-tempered conductor sighed helplessly and said, \u201cI\u2019m a bit busy, Angel. It\u2019s getting late so let\u2019s leave first. You can listen to the record tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Qi Mu hesitated for a moment but finally nodded. He put the record back into the kraft bag then placed it in Akkad\u2019s safe.<\/p>\n\n
