Jing Lin jolted awake from a deep sleep and sat upright in bed, one foot landing on the floor. Hunched forward, he listened carefully in the darkness, every muscle tense. Yet there was no further sound. The house was silent, making it seem as though the noise had been nothing more than part of a dream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Le Le had awakened as well and pressed tightly against Jing Lin’s side. Duckie was awake too. Its eyes glowed with a faint purple light in the darkness. It climbed out of its cardboard box, hopped onto Le Le’s knee, and let out several soft cries, as though trying to comfort him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Jing Lin lit the kerosene lamp on the cabinet across from the bed. He gently brushed a hand through Le Le’s slightly sweaty hair and whispered, “Stay here with Duckie. Uncle’s going outside to take a look.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Because of the summer heat, Jing Lin and Le Le had been sleeping in the downstairs bedroom ever since returning home. He left the lamp burning for Le Le, lit a candle for himself, opened the bedroom door, and stepped outside. Nothing seemed unusual in the living room, though he could hear the chickens clucking nervously in the storage room. Reaching for the handle of the back door, he hesitated for a moment before opening it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Something black suddenly crashed down onto him.<\/span><\/p>

With a muffled grunt, Jing Lin was knocked to the ground. The candle flew from his hand and went out instantly. The dark shape swayed slowly before him. A cool night breeze drifted in, accompanied by a rustling sound.<\/span><\/p>

It was a tree. A tree that had suddenly grown directly in front of the doorway.<\/span><\/p>

In the dim night, Jing Lin could barely make out its shape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

He let out a long sigh of relief, feeling cold sweat soaking his back. He was certain his face had gone pale. The instant he opened the door, he had thought some kind of monster was attacking him. “Uncle’s here! Don’t be afraid, Le Le,” Jing Lin replied immediately.<\/span><\/p>

After fumbling around for a while, he found the fallen candle. Even his hands trembled as he struck a match.<\/span><\/p>

With the light restored, Jing Lin finally saw what had happened.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The thing that had knocked him over was one of the walnut trees in the backyard.<\/span><\/p>

The walnut trees that had once grown quietly along the wall had exploded with growth overnight. Their dense branches spread across almost the entire backyard canopy. Countless limbs intertwined and stretched in every direction. Some had smashed through the storage room windows. Others had burst through the kitchen windows. Still more extended toward the house itself. If the back door had not blocked them, the living room would likely have been filled with walnut branches.<\/span><\/p>

The noise had awakened Jing Lin, and he had assumed it was a thief. Never had he imagined something like this. The weeds in the backyard had previously grown wildly because of the formation’s influence. Now the walnut trees were doing the same without any array at all. The only explanation he could think of was spiritual qi.<\/span><\/p>

The problem was that he had already set up a Spirit-Locking Array around the house. The array not only prevented spiritual qi<\/span> from leaking out but also blocked outside spiritual qi from entering. Somehow, something had caused the formation to fail.<\/span><\/p>

Shielding the candle flame with his hand, he carefully squeezed through the tangled branches and inspected both the storage room and the kitchen. The kitchen had escaped relatively unharmed. Aside from the shattered window, nothing else was damaged.<\/span><\/p>

The storage room was another matter entirely. The walnut branches had not only broken the windows but had also ripped up numerous roof tiles. Some tiles had fallen directly into the chicken coop, killing three chicks and injuring two others.<\/span><\/p>

After everything that had happened, Jing Lin found himself unable to sleep. He soothed Le Le back to sleep and resumed cultivating instead.<\/span><\/p>

Their branches were denser than ever, their trunks had thickened enormously, and many had grown over thirty meters high. Massive roots burst through the earth and spread across the surface.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Looking at the exposed roots, Jing Lin thought of the talisman papers buried around his property.<\/span><\/p>

Talisman paper could resist water, but it could still be moved. The roots must have shifted some of the buried talismans from their original positions, causing the Spirit-Locking Array to fail.<\/span><\/p>

The changes around him had happened far too quickly. In the span of a single night, it felt as though he had entered an entirely different world. Though he had anticipated that major changes were coming, actually seeing a giant toad made it impossible to remain calm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

From a distance came the sound of Zhao Zhiwen calling him.<\/span><\/p>

Jing Lin looked up and saw Zhao Zhiwen, wearing a blue shirt, standing on the roof of his house, waving vigorously. Jing Lin quickly waved back.<\/span><\/p>

“Wait there! I’ll come get you and Le Le!” Zhao Zhiwen shouted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Jing Lin shouted his agreement. After Zhao Zhiwen disappeared back inside, he closed the gate and returned to the house.<\/span><\/p>

He helped Le Le get dressed, pulled on a pair of plastic waterproof boots, and armed himself with a large knife.<\/span><\/p>

Before long, someone knocked on the door. When Jing Lin opened it, he found not only Zhao Zhiwen but also Zhao Chenghuai and Yan Fei’s entire family.<\/span><\/p>

Everyone wanted to head to Ma Renshan’s house first. As the village leader, he was the pillar of the community. Whenever something happened, the villagers instinctively gathered there to discuss what to do.<\/span><\/p>

Yan Fei’s family had awakened to find their property completely overrun by weeds. Vegetable seeds planted only recently had grown overnight, and some had even transformed into unfamiliar varieties.<\/span><\/p>

Yan Fei and Yan Lu remained relatively calm. Father Yan was handling things reasonably well too. Mother Yan, however, had been badly frightened.<\/span><\/p>

The family had hurried out cautiously and happened to meet Zhao Zhiwen and his father on the way to pick up Jing Lin. Knowing that Jing Lin was looking after a child, they all came together.<\/span><\/p>
